Back in 2006, my friend and musical collaborator Nora York came to me with her latest idea. Nora loved mashups long before they were popular, and this time she wanted to blend the opera music she adored with contemporary hits. She was fascinated by the way people have been singing about the same human emotions for centuries—and how combining those voices from different eras could create something fresh. Inspired by her new friend, the extraordinary bass Kevin Burdette, and her brother Andrew Schwartz, who has played hundreds of operas on bassoon, we dove in.

Nora went on to record seven of these pieces. With my encouragement, we then moved into writing original songs and created the stage show Jump. As often happened with Nora, the earlier tracks were simply left behind.
With the encouragement of Nora’s husband, Jerry Kearns, I’ve gone back, found those recordings, and remixed and remastered them. We’re releasing them on February 27th as the final album in Nora’s posthumous trilogy of records.
Diva’s Song may sound strange to most people—but hearing it again, twenty years later, I find these tracks incredibly beautiful. Many, many years of thanks to @stephaniebergerphotography for her beautiful photographs of Nora throughout her whole career. And they are being used in this post again!🙏🏻
