STOP FOLLOWING THE NOISE. START WATCHING THE GAME.

One of the biggest problems in girls basketball today is that too many people are evaluating players based on who is talking about them instead of what the player actually does on the floor.

I was reminded of that Sunday at the UAB Elite Camp.

I had a conversation with @louwillville Lou Williams. And no, I didn’t ask him about players.

HE brought up Bristol Cook.

That got my attention.

Because Bristol is one of those players I believe people need to start paying closer attention to.

The 6’4” sophomore from Guntersville is a legitimate two-way talent. She can run the floor, finish at the rim, rebound, defend and step outside and knock down shots.

And if you watched the state championship game last season, you saw her ability to impact winning when the lights were brightest. She took over in the second half and helped change the game.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

Bristol hasn’t followed the typical AAU path that puts a player in front of every coach, every scout and every recruiting service every weekend.

So naturally, she hasn’t received the same amount of attention as some other players.

And that’s exactly why scouting matters.

I’m not interested in simply repeating what everybody else is saying.

I want to know:

Can you PLAY?

Can you IMPACT winning?

Can you translate your game against different levels of competition?

Can you make your teammates better?

And most importantly…

What does the film and the actual game tell me?

Sometimes the best player in the gym isn’t the player with the biggest social media following.

Sometimes she’s the player sitting quietly in the corner while everybody else is chasing the latest ranking.

Bristol Cook is a player I’m watching.

And when a former NBA Star and one of the greatest sixth men in NBA history brings up a player without me even asking, I’m definitely going back and watching more.

That’s not hype.

That’s scouting.

STOP CHASING THE NOISE.

WATCH THE GAME.

🏀🍎 SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO BE AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER!

After finishing her playing career, she was faced with the question so many athletes eventually have to answer:

“What am I going to do now?”

That uncertainty eventually led her into college basketball coaching—a journey that included stops at UTEP, A&M-Commerce and eventually SFA.

But here’s the part we didn’t expect...

She almost became a TEACHER. 👩‍🏫

After working a summer internship at an elementary school, she fell in love with it and thought she’d found her calling.

“I wanna teach. My gift from God is teaching.”

Turns out she was right.

The classroom just looks a little different. 🏀💯

Sometimes your purpose stays the same... even when the path to it changes completely.

🎥 Watch her tell the story behind her journey from wanting to teach kids to teaching the game she loves.
