The hit of the button brought a smile, a joy, a certain air of childhood innocence. It didn’t start when we were up the hill though, it always began hours before I picked you up; you’d wake up early, eager with anticipation of hitting big and taking the whole family on a tropical vacation. Before I could press my knuckles to the door, you’d open, grin wide, saying “you know I’m ready.” Your caramel, and later, vanilla bean Frappuccino and a lemon loaf were obligatory on our trips up. “J, go ‘head and get you something” you’d say, urging me to indulge my coffee addiction. Driving up we’d listen to music, laugh, but mostly talk, talks of times past. Talk of her childhood, her parents, her siblings, her children and grandchildren. Talk of California and Texas. Talk of being Black in the south, being Black in the west, being Black in general. Once we finally got there and found our first machine, you’d hit that button, usually winning something on the first 20 you put in. After cashing out, you’d hand me the ticket and put the next 20 in. We’d walk up and down, searching for the hot machine. I mostly watched, but then you’d slide me a 20 saying, “J, go ‘head and play.” I’d lose, you’d win, this is how it went til you were finally ready to make your way to the buffet. After trying a little bit of everything, your feeling of content was palpable. “J, I am so full,” you’d say as you started laughing. After I finished another plate, we were done. I’d always ask if you wanted to play anymore, but you were good. Ready to head back down, reminisce and begin to plan our next trip up. I’ll miss this. I’ll miss you.
