The record for largest crowd at a high school football game was set here in Illinois. No, not Friday’s New Trier vs Evanston game at Northwestern University’s Ryan Field even though they sold more than 26,000 tickets.

According to Soldier Field’s website, 115,000 fans attended the 1937 Leo High School vs Austin High School game (before renovations reduced the stadium’s capacity).

The Leo High School Alumni website cites newspaper articles saying the attendance was up to 120,000 for that game between the Chicago Public League and Chicago Catholic League champions.

Besides being a high school record crowd, that game was also considered the largest attendance for any American football game ever for decades.

But Guinness World Records now recognizes the largest football crowd ever to be the 2016 Tennessee-Virginia Tech game at Bristol Motor Speedway which attracted more than 130,000 fans.

🎉📘 Educators Cohort Yearbook Spotlight: Leo Catholic High School

How do we help students connect the lessons of history to the civic questions shaping our world today? Joseph King, Math and U.S. History Teacher at Leo Catholic High School and a fellow in our 2025–26 Chicago Educators Cohort, brought that question into the classroom through an engaging Gilded Age project.

Students investigated whether prominent industrialists like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller were “Captains of Industry” or “Robber Barons,” then explored broader questions of fairness, opportunity, workers’ rights, economic inequality, and the role of government. Through research and discussion, students practiced supporting their ideas with evidence, listening to different perspectives, and finding their voices.

There are a lot of stories told about Black men from the South and West Sides of Chicago, and not enough of them shine a light on the true brilliance that is cultivated in these communities. Yesterday TEDxChicago put that brilliance on the stage with @binkey1, @jeffbeckham, @doss.discourse, @zionaliofficial and the young men of the @leohschicago Boys Choir. I’m really grateful for how the organization is intentional and chooses to represent, uplift, and spotlight Black men at a time when our stories aren’t always told the right way.

@kelly_martina deserves her flowers for organizing an amazing event in her first year as Director of @tedxchicago. The whole day was a testament to the diversity, creativity, genius and innovation that Chicago has always had. Thank you to the entire TEDxChicago team, the speakers, the performers, the volunteers and everyone who came out to support.

This was my fourth year working with TEDxChicago as Performance Curator, and I’m humbled and honored to have been a part of it again.

Once again I appreciate everyone that showed up and showed out. Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Shaka is the fearless principal of Leo Catholic High School in the South Side of Chicago. I was going to write he’s also tireless, but he gets tired…and keeps going…and going…and going.

Yesterday, 100+ boys stood in solidarity with Father #michaelpfleger as he was reinstated at St. Sabina following sex abuse claims.
