The McLaren 600LT Spider is a remarkable piece of British automotive history. True to the Longtail ethos of limited availability, McLaren produced only around 500 units during the car's roughly year-long production run. Notably, the 20,000th car ever built by McLaren was a 600LT Spider finished in Chicane Grey — a fitting milestone for the brand.

The Spider was unveiled in early 2019 as the open-top companion to the 600LT Coupé, which had debuted in 2018. The 600LT name traces its lineage back to the original "Longtail" racing cars — most famously the McLaren F1 GTR, which was victorious in five of eleven rounds of the 1997 FIA GT Championship and finished first and second in the GT1 class at Le Mans. McLaren revived the Longtail name in 2015 with the 675LT Coupé, and a 675LT Spider followed, with all 500 examples selling within two weeks.

The 600LT Spider shares the same 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the Coupé, producing 592 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 457 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm, resulting in a 0–60 mph time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 201 mph. Despite the added complexity of a retractable roof, the Spider weighs only 50 kg more than the Coupé, thanks to McLaren's carbon fibre MonoCell II monocoque chassis, which requires no extra stiffening and keeps the convertible just as rigid as the fixed-roof version.

The retractable hardtop roof — incorporating technology proven in the 650S, 675LT, and 570S Spiders — is more secure and wear-resistant than a fabric alternative, and offers Coupé-like cabin refinement when raised. When lowered, it stows beneath a tonneau cover behind the seats, which also provides an additional 1.8 cubic feet of luggage space.

Both the Coupé and Spider feature top-exit exhausts positioned close behind occupants' heads, amplifying the urgent soundtrack characteristic of LT models, and the cars were designed with a clear focus on track-biased performance and driver engagement. Production concluded in 2020, cementing the 600LT Spider's place as one of the most desirable and collectible modern McLarens.
