“Bias Cut Presents: The Relentless Image” at KidSuper Gallery, Williamsburg. Curated by Archie Caride, Maisy Lewis, Olivia Wein. Organized by Jane Lewis, Editor-in-Chief of Bias Cut Magazine

In an age where the expression “everyone is a photographer” proliferates, questions concerning creative uniqueness and originality arises. Right now, photography is at its most accessible than at any other point in history. On the one hand good, but on the other end, problematic because of how easily the field has gotten so diluted with images that do not say much. Yet, an exhibition like “The Relentless Image” underscores how even in the midst of image-saturated culture, individualized artistic voices and perspectives continue to thrive and shine.

Most admirably, the exhibition’s curators each brought in an incredible assortment of young artists whose common denominator concerns the visual impact of the image. My friend Chloe Abidi - the sole video artist here - evokes the magic and spectacle of watching a silent film or live puppet performance with a light-shadow performance held within an implied set design. Or take the frozen, choreographed self-portraits of Olivia Wein, caught like a flicker of a memory or dream. Similarly, Pia Paulina Guilmoth’s spectral figures and shimmery cobweb vignettes possess that goth romantic flair further evened out by a hauntological aesthetic.

Meanwhile, Adali Schell’s car and roadside subjects make an economical use of light, which can be likened to Maisy Lewis’s photographic trompe l’oeil of an all-too-clear full moon framed by an open curtain. And in a different kind of stage, Leo Sano’s photographic figures occupy the niches of architectural fragments, suggestive of cult of celebrity and performativity.

The curators chose 20 excellent artists for this theme as the plurality of subjects contained here seemed to cover the gamut of photography’s endless preoccupations with the allure of the image!
