some calmer, cooler, quieter time to sketch was much-needed after a busy holiday week and heat wave. @eliwhitneymuseum was a perfect setting with historic buildings, forest, river, and interactive water displays that awakened the inner child in at least a few of us 🤣

thank you all for coming out, and for engaging so closely and thoughtfully with each other's work.

see you next week!

“i’ve been fighting clouds for two years,” evie said triumphantly, “and i’m finally happy with these.” in her painting, bright blue peeked through just the right shade of gray to hint at the summer rain that had luckily held off.

though the sky looked effortlessly painted, her words resonated. it’s why we do it again and again, why quantity matters most: the possibility, and the thrill, of getting it “right” (whatever that means to you) that one time. we’re lucky to share each other’s triumphs and challenges every week.

thanks all for coming out! see you next time :)

a beautiful, cold sunset sketch tonight in east haven. the organic contours of shells, coastline, rocks, clouds, plants, and water captured a lot of us tonight, while others were drawn to structural things like benches, signs, and houses along the shore (and condiments inside the sandpiper!).

"they're all so different," someone remarked at the end. it's always a joy to see the same place through so many eyes—it's why we do it!

thanks all for coming out for our first official outdoor sketch of the year! (and braving the cold together 🥲)

lots to see at lighthouse point park this afternoon: choppy waves, bright skies, rocks and autumn trees, boats crossing the harbor, and historic buildings including five mile point lighthouse. the invigorating wind added a real sensory element to our experience... can you see it in the sketches??

thanks @newhavenparks for opening up the lighthouse, and thanks all for braving the wind to sketch together! see you next week :)

long before apizza, new haven was known for it's oysters! aaron goode from @newhavenbioregional shared how abundant oyster beds once stretched for miles into the brackish waters of the quinnipiac. fair haven developed along the river, with ship building and oystering fueling the maritime economy. some of the historic architecture still stands today! pollution, loss of habitat, and invasive species wiped out oysters and the industry throughout the 1900s ... but with water quality improvements both are returning on a smaller scale. aaron brought local historian joe taylor, with his treasure trove of historic photos, maps, postcards, and ephemera from the neighborhood.

social practice artist nadine nelson @globallocalgourmet described the ecological function of oysters as water purifiers, as well as their symbolism—thriving at the interface between fresh and saltwater habitats, and holding a precious soft interior under a rock-hard shell. she described Oshun, the goddess of rivers, love, beauty, and fertility; Yemaya, goddess of the sea, mother of all waters, protector of women and children; and feminine water deities found in many spiritual traditions. she then shared local oyster shells for us to sketch and help us consider these connections.

and YOU came out to sketch, to learn, to share, or to just be in community. we are so grateful for all of you who joined us for Long Water Land, a collab with @ecoca_nhv about the quinnipiac river. we'll be back to our regular weekly sketching soon. hope to see you!

I love seeing how everyone displays their zines.
👁️📓📚👁️

Thank you to all our zine makers and artists who came out last Saturday! Each of our artists are now represented in the un*named zine library that you can visit @newhavenpridecenter through the month of June.

@ctgrapevine_ and I have some amazing things brewing but you can also catch us this summer at different community events slinging zines and radical learning/healing.

If you’d like a tour of the zine library message me.

See something at Zine Party that you wish you got? Zine makers and artists who also shared their work but not pictured are listed below or check out MAGIK DOT PRESS for updates and links to all our vendors.
