A brief Internet history of ambient rap 🗺️

From Lil B, Clams Casino, and Black Kray to Kyslingo, Lerado Khalil, Shamana and Izaya Tiji, the sound slowly became more atmospheric, minimal and abstract. By the early 2020s, collectives like d1shonorable, requiem and cr3st, alongside producers like .cutspace, iokera, ijji, Silas Roe and Margo Proxy, helped turn ideas into a real internet ecosystem.

At the same time, DPM gave the sound a Maryland identity, while K*lljae and others pushed it through Virginia and the DMV. Now artists like kllhhr, suckrball, sheroy, hunnakay and 22, with producers including 1act, chinapoet, disorderly and num, are carrying those ideas into a new generation.
