It was such an immense joy and honour to be in conversation with the impressive author and academic Brian Willems (@willems.brian) at @burleyfisher to discuss his beautiful novel, The Surviving Cells, published by the wondrous @les.fugitives.press

We discussed the lack of emotional support for cancer patients irrespective of their prognosis, the love-hate relationship patients have with medical practitioners; the understandable anger patients and loved ones can feel towards hospitals and systems of care, the importance of centring illness in fictional narratives; creativity, healing and letting go through the writing process; how the space for grief, grieving and airing grievances can be formed on the page and much much more.

All my thanks to EVERYONE who came and supported the event. We were immensely touched by the questions and responses to the book and the evening overall.

The book is available to purchase online and in all good bookshops now - go buy it!

Big thanks to Burley Fisher, Les Fugitives and Brian and Jasna Willems 🙏❤️❤️🙏

☘️🖤❤️ 'When he was no longer able to make decisions for himself, his family fought for him. That is where toughness lies: in giving up on one thing while fighting for another. Well, it is where one kind of toughness lies, anyway. The cancer kind.' - from Brian Willems' The Surviving Cells, p.13. ❤️🖤☘️

I am very excited and extremely honoured to be in conversation with the fantastic academic and author, Brian Willems (@willems.brian) about his new novel, The Surviving Cells (published by @les.fugitives.press) tomorrow night, 14th Oct, at @burleyfisher

We will be discussing creativity, illness and systems of care, flipping the cancer narrative and debunking its persistent yet historic myths, the gaze of the medical professional, specifically the oncologist's, the literature that has inspired Brian's quietly resistant and powerful work, and, amongst many other things, veering away from the persuasive pleasures and pains of autofiction to embrace the truth and freedom of the fictional narrative.

We're so touched by all who have booked to come tomorrow. If you haven't got a ticket, you can book via the link in my bio:

We can't wait to see you and celebrate the moving, humorous, compellingly written and beautifully conceived novel that is #thesurvivingcells

To Rest Our Minds and Bodies by Harriet Armstrong

I’ve been really excited to read this book! It was released last year by Les Fugitives, an independent publisher initially focused on translations from French women writers but that has since expanded to other translations and literary works. I remember seeing a fresh flurry of posts when this book won the Betty Trask Prize, a British literary award focused on new young authors.

This novel is written from the perspective of a female student who’s about to enter her final year of studying psychology at a university. We hear about her daily life made up of lectures and dissertation work but also the connections she makes, particularly with another dorm mate called Luke. Armstrong describes the closeness that builds between them but also the murkiness and messiness of emotions.

The book sucked me in from its first page and I found its loose narrative style really engaging. I also just felt a lot of authenticity in her descriptions of the university experience and the intensity of forming deep connections for the first time. It felt very relatable to me and made me pause on some pages and re-read some lines that just really spoke to me.

I think you would enjoy this novel too if you like contemporary novels by new authors with an original voice. This one revolves around the young adult experience and first romantic experiences but also grapples with bigger questions like finding meaning and connection too🫶🏼

Saturday stacks part two. Featuring another bonus: Réa, showing us the portrait of her drawn by a 5 year-old who has a little portrait operation going on in Trinity Bellwoods right now. $2 a pop. She gave him a $5 and we recommend everyone use the same tip structure because this child is clearly a genius.
