Paper collage on book page

Lesley Finn is an American-British artist, writer, and educator based in Connecticut, USA. While studying for a PhD in medieval literature she began training in book arts and left academia to pursue that and other creative work. Her collages, which often examine the interplay between text and image, reflect her longtime fascination with books and other technologies of communication. Exploring themes of gender, transgenerational memory, and unusual kinships through an uncanny lens, she uses collage to trace the past that continues to shape the present. In addition to contributing to literary magazines and book projects, she has shown her work nationally in group and solo shows.

Goatsucker is currently available through Collé on Artsy.

In addition to the art present in the gallery, negotiation will feature programming throughout the month. The artists leading these events locate their work in relational space, creating an opportunity to engage with what’s understood in somatic studies as “threshold work,” a navigation from stasis into unfamiliar territory which, while risking discomfort, also presents an opportunity for growth. We will share specifics about each of these events in the upcoming posts. For now, take a look into their practices:

@bodyvoto draws from years of work in anatomy and somatics. They are offering a generous introduction to bodily awareness, teaching participants how to locate subtle chronic physical tensions, leading toward wellness and increased energy.

@k8obee creates art with collective, particularly artist-run, spaces in mind. Her sculptural pieces involve constructing safe spaces for social gatherings, where participants offer mutual support, while physically processing emotions like grief during tactile group activities.

@xlucidreams is a Philadelphia based DJ and curator of DIY spaces. They believe in the value of real-time gathering and deep listening. By transforming spaces into sites of collective introspection, their work illuminates what is possible when we gather with intention, imagination, and care.

@verminunrest will lead a movement workshop that crosses Butoh (a Japanese form of theatrical dance) with contact improvisation. It’s a bit like guided meditation, but with movement, and in a group! Following the workshop, Eilish will be performing a new choreography titled Dusk Dog at The Perch.

Check out their work, and also the amazing artists exhibiting in the gallery this month!

AUTOMAT presents negotiation, a group show curated by member Jo Nakayama! 🫂

The works in negotiation demonstrate a self-reflective capacity of art, capable of revealing and articulating quiet natures of the body. This mode of art parallels what is known in somatic studies as “threshold work,” a navigation from stasis into unfamiliar territory which, while risking discomfort, also presents an opportunity for growth. Threshold work dips into a moment of transformation, when we negotiate our sense of self with a body that exceeds us.

Join us for an opening on July 9th from 6-9 PM, and check back for a series of events throughout the month!
