What a week.

The July 4 week is always a quick turnaround and a big shuffle. This year, even more so.

Jutta, Silvio, Marco, and Kat crossed an ocean so, for one week, all of our parents and siblings could be together. I know a lot went into making that happen, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it. It started with a day in Durham after a 9-hour post-work drive from New York to meet up with everyone. A sunny pool day. Then off to Topsail.

Mom and Dad somehow managed to pull off the biggest Fourth of July celebration we’ve had since before the pandemic. Friends from Durham. Family from Germany. Entertaining the masses without batting an eye.

Mom and Dad, along with the Tesh and Soignet families, made the old/new (iykyk) Tesh house the perfect home base for all of us. There was a constant migration of people all week, and somehow it all worked. Mom had chairs and umbrellas waiting for us every morning on the beach, a seemingly endless supply of food, and a plan for just about everything. The Durham crew made sure nobody’s drink stayed empty for long. The Soignets hosted Kat’s first seafood boil.

Dennis and I joke about the whole “this man right here…” trope, but allow me a moment…

He held so much together this week. First, he kept me sane (and awake) through the aforementioned drive immediately after a day of work. Then he turned around and coordinated so much of the behind-the-scenes work to help bring his family and mine together. Grocery orders. Cars to load. Coolers to pack. People to shuffle around. Constant troubleshooting. Things to remember before anyone else remembered them. He always seemed to be 50 steps ahead.

For the family, it was hard enough saying “see you later.” But to my surprise, I got to do it twice. True to form, my return travel plans completely blew up. A special thanks to Billy, who volunteered to water taxi me to the airport in Wilmington and then, when everything unraveled, made sure I wasn’t stranded. And to Besnik, who started his day at 3:30 a.m. to get me to the airport this morning.

Missing everyone already, and grateful the next visits are already on the calendar.
