Most training is being created by starting at the wrong place. In instructional design - the science of creating training - methodology using the ADDIE model, creating the performance objectives is in Design; creating a slide deck, outline, scenarios and activities is in Develop.

But most instructors start in Develop, missing the entire Analyze and Design Phase.

This means your training is already off the rails.

Sure, people get trained. Sure, people are performing, but creating training starting at Develop means you are missing A LOT of opportunities, creating too generalized a product, or are creating change that never sticks.

It can't stick, because it is missing key elements injected by "expert blindness."

And sure, your people may LOVE your training, but research has shown that participant reactions has almost ZERO correlation with learning.

The fix takes work. The fix takes time. But if your response to fixing things is "well, my way has always worked for me," you're saying EXACTLY what most people claim to hate: "this is the way we've always done it." You literally are doing the way it has always been done...

And it is wrong.

I have talked about my "Case law for training audit" sheet recently and had a lot of people ask for it.

In partnership with @letrainingnetwork , it is now available to use either on their website as a free tool or a downloadable Excel spreadsheet.

Not all cases are SCOTUS. I've heard people say "well, that's not my district so I don't need to worry about it." That's minimum standard mindset and leads to problems. If we build training based on case law regardless of what court it comes from, the more defensible it is. Precedent in one court can support cases in other courts, likewise conflicting case law leads to higher courts.

You can build to the higher standard that meets precedence from anywhere in the country or you can be the case that creates case law.

Wisdom is defined as the ability to discern what is good and bad. Acquiring wisdom is learning what is good and bad: amplifying and perfecting the good while understanding and diminishing the bad.

I have seen posts recently dismissing education as less important than experience. I've seen too much credence given to education, as well. One without the other creates myopia and, quite often, amathia.

I've had arguments completely dismissed with "well, I have 30 years experience doing this thing." However, if you've been doing the thing wrong the whole time, you only have 30 years experience being wrong.

The other position is just as weak: "well, I have a degree, so I know what I'm talking about." Education without practical application is wishes and dreams. I had professors who had intuitions about courage, but never were courageous.

Claiming one is superior to the other is not only hubris, it's fallacious. You cannot gain knowledge and expertise without both. Period.

Knowledge untested in reality is fantasy.

Experience without resistance is ignorance.

You HAVE to experience to be educated - it's literally how we learn.

You HAVE to be educated to understand your experience - it's literally how we gain expertise.

The issue is how we define either. Education is too often defined as the acquisition of degrees. Experience is too often defined as doing the same thing unchanged for a quantity of time.

In reality, education and experience should be the same thing: learn, test, adapt, test, learn, ad infinitum.

If there is nothing new learned or nothing adapted over time, neither education nor experience count for shit.

The Avondale guys showed up ready to work today and they absolutely killed it.

They learned a ton, put in serious work, and got a lot of quality repetitions with manual breaching. Rams, halligans, and prytools. These guys are ready to breach anything.

That is one of the best parts of teaching: watching the pieces come together and seeing that light bulb flip on. Confidence is not built by talking about the work. It is built through quality repetitions, honest feedback, and the willingness to keep improving.

These guys put in the work today, and it showed. Great job by everyone involved!

If you choose to not try, you have already failed.

I have failed a lot, but I have not failed as many times as I have tried.

Being risk adverse is a life of delusional safety. The false belief that if I maintain the status quo, the safety I enjoyed yesterday will be there tomorrow.

Graves are filled with people who thought they would be safe today because they were yesterday. They never had a tomorrow.

Learning only comes through risk. Expertise only comes through risk. Risk is uncomfortable, it's dirty, it's unpleasant, it creates anxiety. The goal is to use that anxiety to fuel your curiosity.

You may fail. Character doesn't show in the failing, it shows in what you do after you fail.

That's what defines you: your character; your resilience.

We can only grow through resistance, resistance only comes from trying.

So...try.

Stop trying to create a tactic for every possible problem.
And stop overcomplicating CQB movement especially when we’re teaching patrol officers active shooter response and crisis entry.
The building changes. The layout changes. The number of officers changes. The problem in front of you changes.
The fundamentals don’t.
If officers understand the principles behind what they’re doing, they can apply them whether they’re moving through a school, a house, a business, or somewhere they’ve never been before.
Give officers solid fundamentals and teach them how to apply those fundamentals to whatever problem is in front of them.
We don’t need a different playbook for every building.
That’s the point.
Teach principles. Build problem solvers. Don’t overcomplicate it.#valorthreatprotection #swat #policetraining #activeshooter #police

We talked about more than active shooter tactics. We talked about how we train officers to overcome three challenges:
TIME. COMPLEXITY. COMPLACENCY.
Make every decision count. Simplify the decision. Never stop evolving.
The officers we train today may someday be the only gun in the fight.
We owe it to them to prepare them for the fight they will actually face.
