Nanga Parbat, The “Killer Mountain”

At 8,126 meters, Nanga Parbat is the world’s 9th highest peak and one of the most dangerous climbs on Earth. Located in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan, its name means “Naked Mountain.”

The Rupal Face on its south side is the highest mountain wall in the world at over 4,600 meters. Deadly early expeditions in the 1930s-50s earned it the nickname “Killer Mountain.”

Austrian climber Hermann Buhl made the first solo summit in 1953, one of mountaineering’s greatest feats. It remains more deadly than Everest but absolutely stunning, with incredible trekking routes through the surrounding valleys.

Have you seen this giant?

They are someone’s husband, father and son, devoted to bringing food to the table beneath a modest shelter for their family and loved ones. They were not only our tour guide and driver, but also our caretakers, making sure we cherished every moment of our stay through the diversity of landscapes, geographically and culturally. We travelled together in the same vehicle, listened and hummed along with the same melodies, swaying and bouncing through winding roads, soaking in the breathtaking views. We moved from guesthouse to guesthouse, slept under the same roofs, shared the same food and laughed at the same jokes. We never saw each other through the lens of skin colour, background or belief, but simply as fellow beings like ourselves, plain and simple. We found joy in each other’s company, carried by the reverberation of how kindness begets kindness. It was an unforgettable journey, ending with a flourishing friendship… 🇵🇰

Our last day in Islamabad was spent visiting some of the capital’s iconic landmarks and sights. Rawalpindi, the older half of Islamabad’s twin city, is well worth a visit for its historic structures and the bustling Raja Bazaar, which reveals the rich cultural tapestry of the country. Faisal Mosque, once the largest mosque in the world upon its completion 40 years ago, houses up to 300,000 worshippers at once. The flower-petal-shaped Pakistan Monument was erected as an emblem of national unity - the four large petals represent the country’s main regions with distinctive cultures, while the three smaller ones symbolise the minorities and other administered territories.

Adjacent to the monument, the Wax Museum offered visual snapshots of Pakistan’s history - from the ancient Indus Valley and Gandhara civilisations, through the cultural shift from Hindu-Buddhist traditions to Islamisation under Arab conquerors and the Mughal Empire, followed by the British colonial era, and finally the independence movement led by the nation’s prominent figures. It was a journey that unveiled the multifaceted character of the country, both historically and geographically - a beautiful land that is vastly underrated and misunderstood. Perhaps more could be done to improve the perception of safety, to draw the appreciation it truly deserves. 🇵🇰

Dharmarajika Stupa is another significant site of Buddhism in Taxila. Built in the 3rd BC by Ashoka the Great, the emperor of the Mauryan Dynasty, who was famously known to have built the most Buddhist stupas and structures across present-day India, Nepal and Pakistan, in his effort to spread Buddhist teachings. Unlike the Jaulian Monastery, the Buddha was not depicted in human form at that time; instead, the massive carved feet at the site served as emblems of the Buddha’s footprints to remind followers of his teachings. Additionally, fragments of bones were found by archaeologists in the 20th century during the British colonial era, believed to be the bodily remains of the Buddha, revered as sacred relics enshrined in the stupa. It is unbelievable to learn that Dharmarajika Stupa was among the 84,000 stupas built by Emperor Ashoka during his lifetime, a true testament to his devotion to Buddhism. 🇵🇰

Before reaching Islamabad, we made a stop at Taxila, the ancient capital of the Gandhara Kingdom, which later became a prominent hub for education, especially for Buddhist teachings. It served as a religious focal point for scholars from China, India, and Central Asia along the Silk Route. The city is rich in Buddhist ruins and relics, with Jaulian Monastery being one of the most notable examples. Built in the 2nd century when Gandhara art began to flourish, the monastery showcases a fusion of Indian spirituality and Greek realism, particularly in the human depictions of Buddha with curly hair and flowing robes.

Like many other cultural sites, Jaulian Monastery was largely destroyed during the White Huns’ invasion in the 5th century, which marked the decline of Buddhism in the region and the eventual spread of Islam. Today, Taxila has been promoted as a Buddhist pilgrimage destination through conservation collaboration with Thailand, and numerous Buddha statues and artefacts are preserved in the Taxila Museum. Some pilgrimage tour groups from Thailand and other countries could also be seen, which was an interesting fun fact we learned during the trip. 🇵🇰

“Dilet Diwona” is the title of a song in the Wakhi language, which literally means “A heart madly in love.” It was a tune often played in the vehicle whenever we were on the road. With its catchy lyrics and rhythmic melody, it perfectly described how we felt about this mountainous “Northern Area” within Gilgit-Baltistan - the passionate love that was akin to euphoria in spring. Yet the joy was ephemeral, and our journey had to move on to other places, leaving behind wistful thoughts - if only we could have lingered a bit longer as we bade farewell. Life is short; nothing stays. All we could do was enjoy the journey as much as we could, for as long as it lasts…🇵🇰

Few places we visited in Skardu Valley before we closed the loop in our “Northern Area” journey in Gilgit Baltistan - the Cold Deserts and Chunda Valleys. Located beyond 2,000 meters above sea level, both deserts (Sarfaranga and Katpana) are among the largest cold deserts in the world. The reason they are called cold deserts is because the sand dunes are usually carpeted with a layer of snow during winter, with the backdrop of snow capped mountains due to the high altitudes. Comparatively, Chunda Valleys, is lesser known to visitors, but it offered majestic views of the Karakoram Range and sweeping vistas of Skardu and surrounding valleys.

Although we might not have seen the best views in these locations with snow clad sand dunes at the cold deserts and apricot trees yet to bloom at Chunda Valleys, we experienced some of the most unforgettable moments interacting with local children singing their folk songs and nearby villagers who came to our aid when our vehicle was stuck in the sand dunes. Beautiful views enrich the soul, while beautiful people touch the heart… 🇵🇰

Shigar Valley, the gateway to K2, the second highest peak in the world after Mount Everest in the Karakoram Range, was not our destination for mountain climbing but rather for exploring its cultural depth. The people of the Skardu region are believed to have Tibetan ancestry, and the influences are evident in their architecture - the stupa lookalike minaret of Khilingrong Mosque and intricate wooden carvings in symmetrical floral patterns are the notable examples. These details are infused with Islamic art, especially in the 400-year-old structures of Shigar Fort and Khilingrong Mosque. While cultural nuances across the valley may seem subtle or even hard to distinguish for foreigners like us in terms of their spoken language or religious practice, perhaps we do not need the ability to discern, but simply a little kindness to embrace. Maybe then, the word would have been a better place… 🇵🇰
