Hit play to see Junior Roller Derby in action! 🛼💥

Here’s part one of Saturday’s Level 1 game — so proud of how hard these juniors played!

@volcaniccityrollers thank you for hosting this awesome event! Core memories (and roller derby players) were made.

Trips like this take a village, and we are beyond grateful to the sponsors who got our skaters on the track:

One of the truest things about roller derby teams and leagues that decide they want to stay alive is that they ride the waves. They go through periods of high numbers and low numbers. Great venues and terrible venues. Fresh faces and seasoned veterans.

Until now, the Whakatāne Roller Derby League has never really had a period where the sole focus was dedicated to growth and developing new (and young) talent. But that is our current drive.

We love our sport. We love what it teaches, what it does for our community, and how it builds connections between people who might not otherwise cross paths. We’ve decided to fully invest in the young minds of our tamariki, alongside creating fulfilling opportunities for adults right here in Whakatāne.

With Head Coach @ivyknivey1 and wingnut sidekick ‘MERICA, Whakatāne Roller Derby League is ushering in a whole new era, aiming for big numbers, massive opportunities, and welcoming skaters of all ages, skill levels, and abilities.

Today, we took another big step forward with a special team event just for our group so the kids could connect and bond.

You’ll probably see a whole bunch of posts popping up over the next couple of days from all the fun we had, because the smiles and the hype were 100% real. After all the hard work they put in this weekend, it was the perfect way to wrap things up.

This page might not stay totally kid-centric forever as they grow, but the most important rule to keep in mind is this: always be nice to our junior skaters because they’re the ones who will be hitting us in the future!
Love always,

Your coaches. 🛼💥

A huge thanks to our sponsors who made this trip a reality!

We are at the Younger Games in Auckland! 😍
Our kids and skate moms/aunties are getting ready for a big day! A big mihi to Ivy for her coaching, VCR for hosting and organizing, and all of the rest of the volunteers.

Are you coming to the Dan Jam today? 10am-3pm.

They're remembering a local legend, Dan, who passed away, giving folks support as they give the skate park a go, and then a comp starting at 11:30am to showcase local talent. There will be good vibes and prizes. See you there?

Another session with Ivy on the blades.

Warm-up laps, then working on speed + explosion — threw a grab in there for good measure.

Backwards laps around the park, carving lines..tried alley-oops and transition turns.

Then 180s on the spot, trying to roll out clean, followed by 180s over the bank.

A few makes. A few sketchy ones. Plenty more to dial in.

Keep rolling. 🤙
