You know we had to head over to Chocolate City, Washington DC and get a memory from promotion vet, Tony Winger about the clubs there:

Throughout the late 70s and into the 80s Black Music was on fire! The Washington, DC Black nightclub life had been transitioning from live music to disco. Hot spots were clubs like The Mark IV, The Room, The Classics, The Ibex, The Quonset Club and Hollywood Breeze’s Metro Club as well as many others. They all succumbed to the perils of the Disco DJ but one club remained open and managed to do both live and disco!

At the Chapter II, the late legendary DJ was Sam the Man Burns and he was breaking records and spinning hits! The Chapter II was the spot in town and RCA, A&M and Associated Label Records were loaded with hits! Shalamar, Lakeside, Leon Heywood, LTD, Stephanie Mills, Dynasty, Instant Funk, the Whispers and Evelyn “Champagne” King to name a few. DC was the breakout market for many a group and it was no different for Dick Griffey’s SOLAR Galaxy of Stars.

It was at the Chapter II that RCA’s Patrick Spencer and Tony Winger decided to have a press party that is still talked about today. Anybody who was anybody in music in the DMV was in attendance and they even had a surprise visit from Rick James!!! Club DJs from all over were also in the place to be, including the late Mark IV DJ Tommy Hall, Arthur “Maniac” McCloud and Greg Diggs, who went on to be a part of the legendary BET staff. This event was even more special because now Mid-Atlantic Promotions Legend Wanda Hayes had recently joined RCA as Patrick Spencer’s assistant and that night Shalamar and the Whispers sang “Happy Birthday”. Wanda said it was a night she’ll always remember.

What were the clubs in D.C. that you remember?
