“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”– Proverbs 16:3

I am truly honored to announce that I’ve been named the Head Freshman Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach at Merrillville High School.

This opportunity means more than just basketball, it’s about carrying forward my grandfather’s legacy and honoring the timing of God’s plan. His passing and this door opening lined up in a way that reminds me He makes no mistakes.

Thank you to Merrillville High School and to Coach Bo for trusting me with this role. I’m beyond grateful for the chance to grow, lead, and pour into the next generation of Pirates, but especially young black men.

Time to get to work. ⚔️🏴‍☠️

Started June with heavy hands, ended with a full heart. The city, the weight room, the experiences, the grief, it all built me. I’m better for it 🙏🏽🙌🏽

It’s been a week since we laid my grandfather to rest. He was a TRUE legend back home in East St. Louis. He changed the lives of many people, not just the athletes that played for him. You can see the impact from all who showed up, all the players that came on stage during his funeral. Boys he turned into men, into college athletes, NBA Players, College coaches, High School coaches and community leaders of their own.

My Grandfather was named “Illinois Coach of the Century” based on his record as the head coach of the East St. Louis Lincoln Sr.
High School Boys Basketball Team; he was the first coach in Illinois to set the following records: four straight tournament appearances, the first Class AA coach to win four Illinois State titles that included three consecutive titles (3-peats). He ranked first in Illinois State title game appearances, first in title game winning percentage, and fourth in the state final four appearances. His most notable Former basketball players are Retired NBA Player LaPhonso Ellis and Former NBA Player and College Coach Cuonzo Martin, and Former NBA Player Darius Miles.
Bennie J. Lewis Sr. was named Illinois Prep Basketball “Coach of the Century” by the Chicago Tribune in 2000. He was named one of the “100 Legends for 100 Years of Illinois High School Basketball” in 2007. He was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997 and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2022. The Lincoln High School State Championship Teams of 1982, 1987, 1988, and 1989 were also inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

My father has seen me coach, my uncle has seen me coach. My grandfather never got the chance to. I never got to find out from his perspective if i was doing a great job of teaching, and leading the next generation as he did. Now he has sky box seats to every practice and game I will ever coach again. When i meet him in Gods Kingdom, I hope he tells me i did an amazing job.

RIP Papa 🧡🖤
