Here are 4 of the most important things that I have been focusing on in the 3 weeks since coming down with COVID, and being forced to stop running.
Stay healthy, my friends 💉🩻🍫🥩

I have lower back nerve compression in the L5-S1 region. Normally, strength training and proper mechanics keep the inflammation in that area at a minimum, but COVID is insidious, and knows exactly where to press.

I am not doing any structural damage if I try to run while the nerve pain is flaring, but it is incredibly painful, and causes the musculature in my back and lower body to seize, which inhibit correct movement patterns.

For the first few days after the pain starts, I can’t flip turn, and any hyper extension paired with rotation (most of swimming, lol) is quite painful. After this initial few days, swimming is a go, due to it being non-weight bearing 🏊

Biking is normally okay for the duration of the recovery process, but I do have to limit time on the TT bike initially because of the closed hip angle, and higher stress on the lower back. Lots of time on the roadie and MTB 🚴🏽‍♂️

Thankfully, the bike and swim allow me to not lose too much fitness over the few weeks of no running. We love trickle down fitness 🚴🏽‍♂️➡️🏊➡️🏃🏽‍♂️

Nutrition is king. Keeping your body fueled is the biggest priority for any recovery process. If your system doesn’t have the energy needed to start doing some repairs, the process will take far longer than it needs to. So many athletes fall into the trap of underfueling when they are dealing with a set back… don’t let that be you 🥙🥗🥪

This has been the most effective treatment method I have found. Laser helps to reduce the inflammation, while dry needling acts to release the contracted musculature and promote correct movement.

Protein > everything. By making sure that you are meeting your daily protein intake requirements, you are giving your body the amino acids it needs to complete structural repairs, and promote recovery.

Keeping your gut and brain happy and functioning normally is another huge component of recovery. Taking care of your gut biome helps maximize the amount of nutrients you can absorb, keeps your mood elevated,

What a weekend back in my home state of Pennsylvania!

Being able to let out my creative side while watching some of the best athletes in the world go head to head is an absolute blessing.

Thank you to everyone that came up to us and shared their admiration of what we are building. It fuels the fire!

(Don’t come at me for how I’m holding the fish. I never caught one before 🤣)

Cup filled up type weekend 🇺🇸

5th overall amateur, 4:11 at NA Champs in Happy Valley. The biggest and best @foleyathletics_ team race to date. Great times on and off the course. Really pleased coming off Jax a few weeks ago. Few easy days then back on the horse and buggy!
