Hideout #4 — The Guild Gathering

Another Hideout, another room full of makers.

Our fourth Guild Gathering brought together 19 leatherworkers, designers, bag makers, shoemakers, repairers, educators, and makers from across New York. We had some familiar faces, but also several new members joining us for the first time.

With our biggest gathering yet, we kept the introductions short and gave more time to what Hideout is really about: putting makers around the same table, sharing what we’re working on, and letting the conversations take their own direction.

As always, a few makers brought pieces to share. Mario Bemer brought two beautifully made pairs of shoes, including one with leather hand-dyed using cocoa beans, and shared stories from more than 30 years in shoemaking between Italy and the US. Emma Thieme brought a beautifully detailed 1960s Triumph Bonneville seat, combining plant-dyed bison, cowhide, brass, and an intricate chevron stitch pattern. We also saw experimental leather forming, hand-saddle-stitched boxes, new belt work, bag prototypes, and plenty of works in progress.

One of the sweetest moments of the evening was an unexpected reunion: educator and footwear designer Marika discovered that two of her former students, Levi and Andrew, were now part of the Guild. A small reminder of how quickly the different paths of craft can cross in New York.

We also shared a few Guild updates, including our upcoming Hide & Seek visits and the next event in the calendar:

September 14 — Watch Strap Making
A special demonstration at the Camille Fournet New York workshop, part of Hide & Seek — Guild Visits & Trips.

Thank you to everyone who came, brought something to share, asked questions, and helped make the evening what it was.

19 makers. One table. Many ways into the craft.

Thanks again to @manhattansaddlery for hosting us and for your continued support of the Guild.

See you at the next Hideout.

Shooting by @levicampello - 2020

(swipe for full page + process/zoom ins) i love finding celebrities who collaborate with rlly cool photographers, or who are just cool themselves. @connorstorrieofficial @levicampello

i rediscovered my love for blending paint with my fingers with that top left painting, and i am really proud of how expressive it looks! i’m also proud of the fact that i freehanded the top right drawing without even drawing guidelines like damn

this whole page took suuuch a long time to figure out and make everything cohesive i have like 29384737 pics in my camera roll of what i thought was the finished product! i feel so insane when i get in these inspirational moods cause i literally couldn’t focus on anything else until i was done lmao

top 2 pics are both connor storrie from the same photoshoot by @levicampello, bottom left is a drawing of an ad from Gucci (Envy) from 2002, another photo i’m in love with (i’ve drawn it twice, attempted thrice) sorry for the ramble byeee

LEVI CAMPELLO - ACT 1 (2021)
