The Shudder: That magical visceral moment when encountering a work of art or a group of artworks, usually for the first times, and indeed truly great artworks have a powerful effect on you almost every time you see them.

That moment when touched by a singular colour, a brush mark or line, or indeed a combination of marks and colours that connect and then there are the auras and glows on and around the works.

In hanging this show there was a instinctive connection of reddish pinks through the various works upstairs and then downstairs the blues connect and your eye floats around the space - causing another visceral aesthetic sensation. Shudder number 2.

An art evoking sensation cannot be prescribed, but can be aimed to attain. All artists want their work to touch an audience somehow. David Gryn

Richard Serra’s drawings always were at the core of his practice, they defy any reading.
In the company of contemporary works, they add to the Shudder, a strong emotional reaction within the presence of materiality, purity of forms, darkness and light.
