I can’t truthfully say that this novel went off the rails when it didn’t even start on the rails. From page one, Black Buck isn’t even in the train station—and it only gets kookier, folks!

This audiobook was absurd, and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. Basically, just picture me pausing the story to contain my shock, embarrassment, and rage while being YELLED at—I mean PUMMELED—by the pure wildness of this plot. Never have I ever been more infuriated by MULTIPLE characters. This book was entertaining, but in a staring at a burning building kind of way. It was also like being stuck inside of that burning building. I was caught up, sucked in, immersed, or whatever you want to call it. But I was also exhausted, surrounded by flames, anxious for Askaripour to reach for the fire extinguisher, and dude legit waited until the LAST POSSIBLE SECOND!!!

In all seriousness, the exploration of the deep-seated racism in startup culture, and let’s face it, all aspects of corporate America and America in general, was really well incorporated. To be fair, it was also wrapped in the most wacky, unbelievable package—especially toward the end—but I went along for the ride anyway, and it was unlike any ride I’ve ever been on. Think of me as one of those warnings you hear in line at an amusement park. I totally want you to read this book (I particularly recommend the audiobook). Just know what you’re getting into.

A one person cart. Front of the coaster. No tracks.
