@bifa_film longlist Best Debut Director – Feature Documentary: Lexi Powner @lexipowner and James Lewis @lewisoflondon

Lexi: “We are thrilled to be longlisted by BIFA for Best Debut Director – Feature Documentary ❤️

We think it’s the naivety of making your first feature that keeps you going. We never imagined how long it would take and how hard it would be!

As queer filmmakers we wanted to shout loudly about the achievements of our community in the decriminalisation movement and to create an archive of their work. We also wanted to re-archive our own past and provide a queer perspective on our British history.

Our community is incredible at pulling together and forging chosen family. We did this with each other in our co-director role. But we are most proud of our collaboration and friendship with Rosanna, Friedel and Raven. They shaped how their stories are told and the film is full of joy because of them.

For us success has always been them being proud of how they’re seen on screen. Being longslisted is a huge bonus. Now we just need more people to come and watch the film to see what all the fuss is about!”

So nice to make this joinery for @b.m.c.d and @lexipowner, and I really like the colour and handles they chose to finish it off.

Designed with them, it does just what they need for their space.

Made using a combination of MDF, with tulip and pine for edging and detailing, the design was inspired by an old cabinet that sat in the place of the new one.

The bold curves were cnc’d, with matching curves in tulip edging to both seamlessly mask cabinet joins and create a great edge for painting

We've joined forces with @thelovetankcic to present a screening of the incredible documentary @outlawsfilm along side the beautiful art-doc short @outofshadowsfilm. The screening is followed by a Q&A with Out Laws co-directors James Lewis and Lexi Powner.

OUT LAWS follows LGBTQIA+ activists from Namibia, Sri Lanka, and Barbados as they challenge colonial-era laws criminalizing queer individuals in over sixty countries.

OUT OF SHADOWS reflects on migration, sexuality, gender, and health through the stories of three queer immigrants living with HIV; Luis from Venezuela, Jordi from Barcelona, and Prateek from northern India. Honouring those silenced by stigma and spotlighting the power of community to create visibility, empowerment, and change.

How do we build the worlds we want to live in, where we can show up in all our uncensored queerness without shame, stigma or fear? Sometimes the only way is to cut ties – with homelands, past versions of ourselves, and violent histories alike. 🪢✂️

Join us for our eighth collaboration with @thelovetankcic legends as we follow HIV-positive queer immigrants leaving their roots behind and finding freedom and empowerment in their new life in Ireland, alongside the monumental fight of queer activists from Namibia, Sri Lanka and Barbados to overturn anti-LGBTQIA+ laws – legacy of the British Empire and Henry VIII’s power games.

Out Laws follows three queer activists as they fight to overturn the colonial-era laws that still criminalise their lives. The battle unfolds in a moment of escalating jeopardy: activists are being murdered, churches and politicians are mobilising against LGBTQIA+ rights, and foreign actors are exporting hate across the Global South.
From tense courtrooms to private moments of fear and determination, the film reveals what it means to resist when the cost can be everything.
Visually bold and emotionally urgent, Out Laws exposes the political forces trying to force queer people back into the closet — and the movement pushing back with courage, joy and global solidarity.

This is vital viewing - one not to be missed.

📍LONDON CINEMA SCREENING

Find out what the buzz is all about - see Out Laws at the prestigious @berthadochouse on 30th June.

Part history lesson, part celebration, all defiance: this is resistance told through courage, wit and joy.

More than half of the countries criminalising same-sex intimacy inherited those laws from colonial Britain. Out Laws is the story of the people tearing up the script.
This fascinating history that tells us so much about the scapegoating and power games that drive the current backlash against LGBT+ rights.

Decriminalisation is decolonisation.

Out Laws is a powerful documentary that follows LGBTQIA+ activists from Namibia, Sri Lanka, and Barbados as they challenge colonial-era laws criminalizing queer individuals in over sixty countries. Filmed during a time of rising authoritarianism, it highlights the personal and legal struggles of three courageous individuals who are reshaping history.

The film unites its protagonists in London as they prepare for a landmark Pride event. Through storytelling and exploring archives, they confront the colonial roots of criminalization, creating a powerful narrative about solidarity, community, and reclaiming erased histories.

Out Laws highlights the urgent relevance of contemporary anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric globally, linking it to its colonial origins. The film explores how laws and moral panics were created to support empire and showcases the efforts of activists in the Global South working to dismantle these oppressive systems.

Support and solidarity from @outhouse_dublin and @lgbtireland_ie was important for making QSFF happened. @queerasianpride.ie

Scenes from @insideoutfestival Closing Day! (And a couple from Friday, because what is time during a festival anyway?)

My first festival as ED was such a delight, thanks to the best team anyone could ask for, as well as our volunteers, board, supporters, partners, audience members, filmmakers, artists and everyone else who had a hand in making it such a success. It takes a huge community of support to put on an event like this and I’m so grateful for ours. 🌈🎥🍿💕💖
