A few moments from our spring & summer season ⛰️🥾

It’s been a great few months — hiking remote trails, reaching high summits, watching birds and wildlife, and exploring different corners of Azerbaijan with people from around the world.

As the summer mountain season comes to an end, we’re already looking forward to autumn 🍂 Cooler days, changing landscapes, bird migration and plenty more time outdoors.

Thanks to everyone who joined us this season. See you out there! 🙌

Sinirastas Azerbaidzanin vuorilla on melko tavallinen mutta vaikea kuvattava. Joskus onnistuu.
Blue Rock Trush is quite common but difficult to get photographed. Sometimes you’re lucky.
Thanks to Skaftung Nature and @birding.azerbaijan and @leylamuslim .

Over 800,000 raptors counted - and we’re not even halfway through the season! We had just caught our breath after the Honey Buzzard peak when the next wave arrived: Steppe Buzzards, Black Kites, and juvenile Honey Buzzards in full force! Oh and do they love to scatter in all directions… But we kept pace with the flow.

We had some unforgettable moments during the count: sunrises lit with harriers and late afternoons when rainbows formed behind Black Storks kettling through. Moments when we were wrapped in clouds and rain, convinced the skies had gone silent, when the sudden screech of Honey Buzzards broke through - calling to one another as their shapes emerged from the mist.

In the great kettles of Honey Buzzards, the team searched for Crested Honey Buzzards - and they finally showed up in the last few days! The raptors - who take the center stage in our count - together with the constant calls of European Bee-eaters, along with flocks of Rollers, Pelicans, Glossy Ibises, Hobbies and Black Storks, are making this once again an unforgettable count.

Whaaahhh! Half a million raptors!!

Today we counted over 100K birds, which means we reached the half a million milestone!

After having some more relaxed days before (still about 30K daily), the birds went crazy today. While the morning started out as normal with some streams in the east and groups of Harriers all over, around 11 o’clock massive streams of Honey Buzzards, Black Kites mixed with the occasional harriers and eagles started streaming all around Station 1 and in between the stations. And of course, as they do, the Honey Buzzards and Black Kites nicely mixed up together, making the counting all the more challenging. But we thrive on this chaos and confusion! It just makes us more excited!

After several hours of counting, among this wildness of honeys and Black Kites pushing us to the half million, we were able to enjoy Egyptian Vultures and the Caucasian Viper, their bright colours reflecting in the afternoon light. And while the day ended, the birds did not. It felt calm, but the birds streamed. Unstoppable and ongoing.

Now let’s try and reach the 1 million milestone!

Last year, we launched the BRC Flyway Monitoring Traineeship, a new initiative developed together with our long-time partner OSME, to support and empower ambitious bird conservationists from across the East Afro-Eurasian Flyway. The aim: to provide our trainees with hands-on experience in organizing migration monitoring, and to help them bring that knowledge back to their home countries and initiatives throughout the flyway.

With the support of OSME’s Youth Development Fund, the programme continues this autumn — and we are proud to welcome no less than three new trainees to Batumi. Now, as autumn approaches, we’re thrilled to introduce the 2025 cohort of trainees: Motahareh from Iran, Yaren from Turkey and Leyla from Azerbaijan. You can read more about our trainees and the Flyway Monitoring Traineeship via the link in bio.

"Guardians of the Flyway" workshop
Thank you @eilat_bird_sanctuary @yoavperlman

За эти 5 дней воркшопа получила столько мотивации, чтобы работать, учиться и развиваться дальше. Пример других стран помогает держаться на плаву и не поворачивать назад. Вначале всегда сложно, но если получилось у других, значит получится и у тебя 😉

One, two, three… smile! 😊📸
Braving chilly winds and a few sandstorms over the past few days, our dedicated counters reached an incredible milestone today at the counting spot! We’ve officially counted 1 million southbound migrating birds! 🦅🌍✨
Among the flocks, some feathered travelers stood out, like 4 Oriental Skylarks a day. Black-throated Thrush, resident Siberian Pipit and Stone Curlew and so on!
Stay tuned for more!
