One last lingering memory

An excerpt from my final essay

Four months ago, we arrived at the airport with suitcases full of everything we couldn’t live without, and left everything we thought we could. We boarded a plane as 12 strangers, crowed together in anticipation of the unknown and whispering out the windows about things that aren’t yet real. Things that won’t be real until the apartment in Perugia changes from “my apartment” to “my home”. Until Perugia became the place we counted down the seconds to our return to, while bemoaning the delayed trains back. Perugia. Home.
Now we’re packing those same suitcases full of clothes we never touched, memories we’ll never let go of, and using this essay to procrastinate the inevitable. Tomorrow we’ll get on a bus, then a plane, then a long car ride back to the home we left behind all those months ago. We’ll open the doors to untouched bedrooms, and everything will be exactly as we left it, but nothing will be the same.
Arriving in Perugia, we left our hearts tucked safely in a drawer on the other side of the ocean, but slowly, as winter turned to summer and houses became homes, our heart traversed their own journeys in time with our travails. Lonely nights spent in barren apartments turned into potluck dinners under tacked-up Polaroids and sparkling string lights. Somewhere between our first plane ride and our last, impossible friendships bloomed, and part of our hearts found us again. Now, returning to the homes we were so scared to leave, our hearts, once again, aren’t making the journey. Instead, they’ll stay tucked away in a back booth at Elfos, they’ll stay stuck on trains to and from the Rome airport, they’ll sit in classrooms waiting for life lessons that aren’t coming, and they’ll wander the streets of Perugia searching for memories that no longer linger.
In 24 hours, we say goodbye. In 30 we board a plane. In 48, we return to rooms exactly like we left them. Rooms we’ve been longing for since we left. They’ll be exactly the same, a half-drunk water bottle and half-finished book right where they should be. And breathing in the stale air, nothing will be the same. Because home is now 5,000 miles away.
