Calgary, this deserves a round of applause. The Calgary International Film Festival reaches the final day of its 27th edition today. Back in 2000, the first festival lasted six days and welcomed 8,000 people. Twenty-six years later, there is plenty to celebrate. The 2026 programme included more than 100 short films. Servus Free Movie Monday offered 1,000 free tickets on September 28. And @mbarriem of @lhiproductions and @doc_diana_monea, THE LEGACY OF A BUTTERFLY won the Devon Bolton Memorial Alberta Short Film Award. That is a lot of imagination to bring into one city. And a good reason to take a chance on a film you might never have found on your own. To the filmmakers, crews, volunteers and audiences who make a film festival possible, this is your celebration too. Which film from this year’s CIFF stayed with you after the credits? #CIFF2026 #CalgaryFilm #AlbertaFilm Festival photographs are from CIFF 2025, by Kristin Breitkreutz and Shannon Johnston, via the CIFF Media Hub. Final image is a film still from THE LEGACY OF A BUTTERFLY, also via CIFF.

@lesiatbear shared: Last night’s Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) SHORT FILMS EVENT. Legends of a Butterfly 🦋 won The Grand Jury Award 2026 Monique Barrie outstanding directing of the beautiful Diana Monea, OD, FAAO story was touching and inspiring. Video by @lesiatbear of @lhiproductions @mbarriem @doc_diana_monea @anamalick233 @ciffcalgary @thegrandyyc Dr. Diana Monea’s story extends far beyond the optometrist’s chair. The Legacy of a Butterfly is a 13-minute documentary portrait of one of Alberta’s longest-practicing female optometrists—and a woman whose life has been shaped by ambition, reinvention, and resilience. Raised on a Saskatchewan farm, Monea dreamed of a bigger life, first exploring fashion and imagination before heading to Waterloo in the 1970s. There, she was the only woman in her optometry class. She later established her first practice in Regina, despite having no business background, and became the family breadwinner. For Monea, eyewear was more than a necessity: it was a way to express personality and style. After moving to Calgary, her friendship with designer Paul Hardy helped deepen her sense of identity and connection to the community. Today, Monea is known as an Albertan icon, author, grandmother, and philanthropist. Along the way, she has faced loss, setbacks, and scams, yet maintained her distinctive flair and determination. Structured in three acts-caterpillar, cocoon, and butterfly the film traces Monea’s transformation and celebrates a woman who has continually made her own way and claimed her place in the spotlight. Written and directed by Monique Barrie, who also serves as executive producer, the film is produced by Barrie and Griffin Cork. Ana Malick co-wrote the screenplay, Josef Wright is the cinematographer, and Morgan Ermter is the editor. Makeup and hair by Lesia T. Bear. The cast includes Diana Monea, Paul Hardy, and Holly Allen. @ciffcalgary @lhiproductions @mbarriem @marsbar_mb @anamalick233 @paulhardyinc @themorgue @frinnca @jo.wright @griffincork @lesiatbear @doc_diana_monea

✨ Celebrating our own Dr. Diana Monea ✨ A true pioneer, Dr. Diana Monea made history as the only woman in her optometry class at the University of Waterloo in the 1970s. Her remarkable journey as an optometrist, author, philanthropist, and advocate is a story of resilience, reinvention, and inspiring others to see what’s possible. Today, her story comes to the big screen in The Legacy of a Butterfly, an Alberta-made short documentary directed by Monique Barrie. A beautiful tribute to a woman whose life reminds us that every transformation begins with courage. Congratulations Dr. Monea. 👏🏼🦋🙌🏼 📸: @lhiproductions , Monique Barrie #womeninspiringwomen #womeninmedicine #osi #optometry #universityofwaterloo

Alberta was handing out its own film awards four years before Star Wars existed. In 1973, a handful of Alberta filmmakers incorporated their own industry association, AMPIA, because nobody else was going to build a stage for their work. A year later they held the first Rosie Awards. That first ceremony made the Rosies the oldest film and television awards show anywhere in Canada outside Quebec, a title they still hold more than half a century later. This year marks the 52nd edition, a run longer than most Canadian institutions manage, provincial or federal, and it started with a small group of Albertans deciding their own industry was worth celebrating without waiting for permission. Nobody in Ottawa built this. A regional industry organized itself, funded itself, and kept showing up every year since, through recessions, format changes, and the entire history of Canadian television. The oldest thing on the list turned out to be the one nobody was watching for. #RosieAwards #AlbertaFilm #AlbertaHeritage #YYC
