My dad has poured himself into coaching his entire life, even when he was able to make it to event of mine all I was able to focus on was HIS voice coaching me from the sides, but specifically many WVU University athletes for decades, and having my brother coach alongside him with some of the hardest working kids this university has been something I’ll always be proud of and wish I have the opportunity to see more of. No NCAA backing, barely any university support, no guarantees. . . just gloves, grit, and a whole lot of heart. A personal note this isn’t my biological father BUT he has stepped up ever since I was two and has always provided. TO THIS DAY. When I was in kindergarten I wanted to grow up to be just like him. Work at Costco in the bakery 😂 He has worked for maximum security prisons for 20 years, even though I don’t want that job i admired the courage and strength because that wasn’t easy for him . . . Okay enough of that.

Something that makes college boxing and the NCBA special is the sportsmanship and camaraderie between the boxers. Very cool this morning to see Anthony Abrego (West Virginia University) and Pape Daouda Traore (US Naval Academy) talking and joking with each other as they both had a little extra work to make weight before they fight each other in a few hours in the NCBA Midwest Region Tournament 132lb Championship. This will be their 3rd time fighting each other in the past year with the current record at 1-1. They’ll both be advancing to the NCBA National Tournament in Lawrenceburg, IN on April 10-12. It’s always great to see the respect that the NCBA boxers and coaches have for each other and is something unique within USA amateur boxing.

The Midwest Region Tournament had 54 matches across 3 days featuring 58 boxers from 7 different universities and every single one of them have been very respectful and great to work with.

F I G H T I N G C O M E S F I R S T - Not showing up is a choice; making excuses is a decision you make when you choose to take the easy road. Those actions are the difference between you reaching your goals and remaining in the same stagnant state you complain about being in. This was a rough sparring session today for a couple of reasons. But being successful doesn’t care about your excuses. What I am saying is only meant to elevate you; we are the same team.
