East Exit (short film) SYNOPSIS

East Exit aims to shine a light on the juvenile struggles of young adults through the story of a strong, yet fragile friendship as they evolve into adulthood.

Two childhood friends, Nora and Chloe, find solace and hope through a brief reunion in their childhood town. Throughout the film, they discuss the struggles of adjusting to their newfound adulthood.

I conceived the AmAuteur Film Festival (@amauteur.filmfestival) in the fall of 2024 in the hopes of championing different kinds of creativity that I often see lacking in traditional festivals. Part of this was likely a sort of spite against my own slew of rejections as a filmmaker operating on the fringe, but it was mostly out of pure love and adoration for the form and a desire to give back to smaller artists who express themselves authentically and uniquely.

Now, the festival has actually happened and I still kind of can’t believe it. Making these things happen from the ground up is obscenely difficult, especially when you’re going in without experience or a safety net — if this thing had failed, my own money would’ve gone down with it. And yet we persisted, thanks to my dedicated team, the eager friends and fans, and most importantly, a slew of filmmakers who trusted in our vision and bravely shared their work with us.

I’m not a spiritual person and I don’t believe in miracles. But the closest thing to a miracle, in my understanding, is someone having an idea for a piece of art, then going and making it in spite of whatever limitations they face. AmAuteur was created to honor that fierce passion and to enliven it, and I think it went so well not because we had money or experience in this field, but because we simply cared. A lot.

So the key takeaways a week later?

One: keep making your art and don’t let anyone stop you. Permission is overrated, figure it out. The tools are more accessible than ever. But don’t use AI, fuck that.

Two: create with care, create with love, create with that sense of childlike joy that prompted you to want to create in the first place.

Three: the AmAuteur Film Festival will return. Bigger. Better. More epic. And I hope to see you there :)
