This year marks my 10 year anniversary of competing in the Elite Mixed Ouray Ice Fest competition. My first time here I remember being swept away in whirlwind of emotions, nerves, excitement, and a burning desire inside to master this sport. After seeing this competition for the first time, I knew that this is what I wanted to do, but had no clue of how to make it a reality. I returned back to Durango and confided in Marcus who was my rock coach at the time, and told him my desire to compete in mixed climbing one day. To my surprise Marcus told me he used to compete and offered to take me under his wing and teach me. Over the years Marcus selflessly offered his time, knowledge, and energy to helping me reach my goals throughout this sport. That moment was the start of what has become a life long friendship and the beginning of marcus mentoring me and teaching me what being a mentor is all about.

Not much has changed, we are both still scratching and dangling together whenever we can! All I can say is the role a mentor has on your life can be an incredible thing, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without your friendship and guidance over all these years @mgclimber1 . Here’s to many more fun years of climbing, adventures, and coffees to come!

Also a huge thank you to the @ourayicepark for hosting us all and running an amazing fest given all the weather challenges this year! A huge shoutout to all of the volunteers who make this competition possible! The amazing routesetting by Marcus, and to @maple_climber who directed the comp for the first time and absolutely crushed it! She is a true master of herding cats 🐈 😂lol

When I first started climbing, this boulder took first place on my list of climbs to accomplish. At the time I didn’t even know it was a boulder problem till I saw @deanpotter take it down on youtube with mocs.

It was a pretty insane experience sitting at the top, taking in the beauty of yosemite, reflecting on all of the experiences I had, and reflecting on those who helped me along the way.

But to whoever likes to actually read captions this was a bit of a thing. I am really stoked to have been able to do this, especially because it marks some sort of transition in my mental game in being able to stay calm and focused while having good-ish technique.
With that said, in hindsight possibly giving this boulder another day or building out the mental space a bit more would have reduced the total risk of the climbing itself because reluctantly I might have had a bit to much tunnel vision.
I guess also transitioning from kayaking into highball territory I realized I really enjoy the feeling of having risk near the peak of performance.
While that kind of the gamble comes hand and hand with kayaking, highballs aren’t quite like that.
Either way, I am stoked to have done this, but making sure to slow down the process a bit might be good idea. If you told past me that I would be climbing a boulder that is roughly the same hight as spirit falls I would not have believed you.
It has been a wild ride to go and be bad at something for a change, with basically no kayaking and mainly climbing has been an experiment in how mindset and perceived perception of the self effect you. Essentially how we view ourselves is directly linked to both our performance as “athletes” and in our day to day lives and decisions that we make. Fundamentally focusing on the fact that achievements are helpful for pushing yourself, but that fundamentally that is all they are good for. If motivation is coming from a place of, if I do x y and z then I will finally have the right to call myself a climber or kayaker is inherently flawed. This self view can then be presented in “normal life” as really off putting and it definitely misses the point. At the end of the day no one cares that you climb v10, or if you ran Jakes. The only thing that matters is are you true to those close friends around you.
Anyway, also I guess trying to some sort of reflection of the risks, and stoke that I do and putting it in a more public forum will be illuminating in some way?

Flyboy Direct

Attended the church of send in Bishop. This one was a treat! It felt really good to come back to it from march, when I couldn’t do the left variation into it, so it was a great marker of progression and just all around a really fun climb! Has a bit of everything in it!
