FRAT. Back in 2007 I made a decision that changed the course of my life. It provided me with tools to self actualize and take pride in my heritage. As an immigrant to this country, identity is a tough concept to grapple with. I was always “in between” different groups. Always looking to assimilate with other cultures, but not “Latino” enough for my own culture.

Joining @lsu_1979 gave me not only a network of exemplary Latino men, but also a sense of pride and understanding of the complexity that is being Latino in a foreign land.

The Frat gave me some of my most meaningful friendships, ones I still value and engage with today. I’ve been a groomsman in countless weddings and seeing my brothers’ children grow up so fast.

I had been relatively disengaged from the Frat for some time, but back in April it was our 45th Anniversary and I made a trip out to the banks of the Raritan to celebrate among my Brothers. This banquet gave me such a sobering look at the great work that my organization continues to do. For young brown men who look like me to find their identities and take pride in who they are. I never truly understood the importance of this 3 lettered organization until I took a step back.

Pa’lante, siempre Pa’lante. #LatinosSiempreUnidos ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
