I rolled up summer and I put it on film and I crossed the whole country to get photos from Chicago to New York and back and I thought about my dad and his photos and felt really fulfilled and this isn’t even all of it if you can believe

September was SO GOOD. I watched more verticals than I have in a really long time and mostly because there was just so much to genuinely enjoy. Not tolerate. Not “well, that was pretty good for a vertical.” Actually, thoroughly ENJOY.

And then The Great Gatsby came sliding in at the VERY end of the month and basically said, “HEYi. Don’t finalize that list yet.” I’m telling you: it is spectacular. I need one more watch before I decide whether it gets the official RealReelDrama Recommended seal, but I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend it. Yes, it’s on a new app. Yes, it is worth the download.

So after a RIDICULOUSLY competitive month, my September Top Five:

1. The Great Gatsby — @lovehitshort
@megbush & @thekylemichael & @_quinnholmes & @smilin_aislinn & @lunamrivera & @eugabrielquintella

2. Hollywood Starlet — @atwistofficial
@bella.mraz & @erictaylorguilmette & @mmactuj & @eliseluthman

3. Swipe to Forever — @shortical
@megbush_ & @___2shay

4. I Swiped Right on a Serial Killer — aTwist
@mariah_moss & @addison_bowman & @thefakeshaynedavis @libadalov

5. Undercover in the Dungeon — @altatvapp
@samuelepbarron & @carlynicolecharters & @marvalarex & @gracefouracre

And can we discuss the giant MEG BUSH dominating my top 5 AGAIN?! She is having one heck of a run.

A different kind of vertical and some serious praise for Shayne Davis and Mariah Moss in “I Swiped Right on a Serial Killer”.

“It feels like watching Dexter all over again, and Davis is our Michael C. Hall.”

✨ SEPTEMBER RECAP ✨

WHAT A MONTH! 🤯🍿

I watched 50 Verticals in September! I don’t think I’ve watched this many in a single month in at least a year! 😂

Of course, not everything was amazing, and there were a few disappointments along the way, but overall, September was a pretty solid month in VertiLand!

We also welcomed aTwist, and so far, I’m intrigued! Not every release has been a hit, but I’m really enjoying the variety of genres they’re exploring. We often complain about platforms playing it safe, so it’s refreshing to see one willing to experiment and try something different. 👀

And let’s not forget GammaTime’s very first BL Vertical, which I absolutely LOVED! 🌈💚

September definitely gave us some great content, but now it’s time to see what October has in store!

Will VertiLand embrace spooky season? 🎃👻 I certainly hope so!

What was YOUR favorite Vertical of September? 👀

New Vertical Release-I Swiped Right On A Serial Killer-My Thoughts

So when I think about vertical micro-dramas, I can say pretty emphatically that “serial killer” does not jump to mind. Billionaires, werewolves, hockey players, mafia dons, are all familiar characters played by male leads in the vertical world. So when I sat down to watch I Swiped Right on a Serial Killer from @atwistofficial starring @mariah_moss and @thefakeshaynedavis I was not sure what to expect.

For me that’s a good thing, anyone who’s read my previous reviews, knows that I have an affinity for the unexpected in the vertical world. I like being challenged, I like being surprised, I certainly love to see the actors and actresses that I’ve become so familiar with stretch their acting muscles and push boundaries and that’s exactly what this vertical does.

I think the other aspect of the story that kept me hooked is that it taps into the fear anyone who has used a dating app has confronted “could this guy/gal be a psychopath? Will I be safe? Are they too good to be true?”

aTwist is turning the vertical world on its head by giving us unique stories, stellar casting and terrific production. Also starring @addison_bowman and @libadalov directed by Nick Fabiano and written by @ceci.albertini and @crystalonbusiness

MY TAKE -

I SWIPED RIGHT ON A SERIAL KILLER

With a title like I Swiped Right on a Serial Killer, you know this probably isn’t the world’s most successful dating app experience. 😂

This one was actually lighter than I expected. There’s suspense and a little danger, but it never becomes overly heavy. It knows when to have some fun with the premise, which made it an easy watch.

Mariah Moss brings a really natural quality to Harper as simply putting herself back out there turns into something she definitely didn’t sign up for. Addison Bowman as Liv is exactly the kind of best friend you want beside you when things start going sideways. Harper and Liv are true besties through and through, and their friendship gives the story a lot of its personality.

Ali Badalov adds another interesting piece to Harper’s suddenly complicated dating life. His character, Ali, enters the picture not long after Trent, adding another dynamic to a situation that was already becoming anything but straightforward.

Shayne Davis really impressed me as Trent. We know pretty early on exactly what kind of man Harper has swiped right on, so the fun isn’t in figuring him out, it’s watching Shayne play that contrast. He can turn on the charm when Trent needs it and then remind you very quickly of what’s underneath. He really did a great job with this role.

And if you’ve watched your share of verticals, pay attention. A few familiar faces pop up along the way. I’m not naming names because recognizing them is half the fun. 😉

But the ending is what got me.

I was pretty confident I knew where everything was headed.

Apparently, I did not. 😂

That final turn caught me completely off guard, and in aTwist fashion, the door is left open just enough for more.

And with this one? I’m perfectly fine with that door staying open.

Fun, suspenseful, a little twisted, and another reminder that maybe we should all be reading those dating profiles very carefully. 😂
