A tiny taste of last weekend’s annual Libero Canto Festival in NYC. A few VoDe students joined in this year for a masterclass taught by Kinga Cserjesi, a presentation on the late inspirational music and singing teacher Hedda Szamosi, and students and teachers alike sang together in an evening concert. It is a community of devoted music students and voracious learners. What a joy!

Photos of the VoDe crew posin’, the @liberocantosinging teachers bowin’, @marisa_michelson singing Vivaldi in the masterclass, pre-concert boggle, @jonathankoeofficial singing his own song, warming up together, @lanahjk singing Handel, Molly in the masterclass (no video of her heartfelt singing, unfortunately!), the homage to Hedda, Deborah Carmichael in all her glory, more Vivaldi coloratura, - and then at the very end, a longer, completely glorious clip of @lilygreenart singing a composition by Marisa with such truth and fullness! Thank you to all who attended!

Whew! Our 2nd ever cohort of teachers-in-training (3 coming from NYC, 1 coming from Ireland) converged in upstate NY and wow, what a week. This was an intensive, rigorous time for the teachers to gain more confidence with the touch and bodywork that awakens, opens, releases and frees the singing, speaking, voice-giving Human Being. Thank you to our incredible special guest teacher, the neuromuscular therapist, massage therapist, choir director and singer Peter Coulianos for sharing his understanding of the anatomical function of the jaw and tongue - and his ways of working on these areas in one’s own body. Our trainees continued developing functional hearing, practiced teaching each other - and someone completely new to the work. They, themselves, also received multiple sessions from Marisa because experiencing the work in one’s own body is essential for teaching it with authority. And thank you also to our other 1:1 master guest teacher, Deborah Carmichael of the @liberocantosinging . Finally, thank god for the gorgeous land, and the company of each other throughout. Thank you @jonathankoeofficial @maia.nu.nes Molly Ranson and Eliana Kissner♾️

Isn’t this interesting to contemplate?! Thank you to one of our greatest teachers - Edvin Szamosi - and to the @liberocantosinging for the years of precise somatic and also Socratic-style inquiry into what “voice” even is.

Have people developed more tension in their speaking voices post World War 2?

We spend a lot of time listening to recordings of people singing and speaking. As we have learned via our Libero Canto lineage, in North America and Europe a significant shift in vocal function (speaking and singing) seemed to occur after WW2. Whether that shift was positive or negative (to speak in binaries) isn’t the point here, as cultural trends are always shifting and complex. What is observable, however, is the shift itself.

What we hear in general post WW2 is more vocal tension, less gentle phonation, more efforting, and what we would describe as voice that is less “on the breath.” What do you think? Listen to some examples and let us know. Below we have listed just a few.

In our recent live group practice class for Channel Members, we listened functionally to the speaking voices of Katharine Hepburn (b. 1907), Paul Robeson (b. 1898), Judy Garland b. 1922), Mahalia Jackson (b.1911), and Maria Callas (b. 1923). Also we threw in Dr. Morton Cooper who is still living and who developed an approach to speaking that was healing for many people with vocal disorders after being diagnosed with one himself.

🎶✨,, Voice is breath.Libero CantoTM is a holistic, process-oriented approach to vocal pedagogy. It is called, “the path to free singing” (la via al libero canto), because the goal is to liberate people who wish to sing from physical, emotional, or mental constraints, so that they can make music through singing with ease, grace, vitality, and joy.,, 🎶@liberocantosinging

Here is a beautiful quote by @marisa_michelson’s teacher’s teacher, of @liberocantosinging, Edvin Szamosi:

“Don’t pretend anything, don’t pretend feelings, or pretend to have a beautiful voice, or pretend to have a bigger voice than you have at the moment, but be content with this voice. The voice is not an end in itself. The goal is that the real person becomes manifest in the voice, liberated from physical tensions, spiritual inhibitions, so that she can be genuine, undisguised, without having to distort herself or try to produce a ‘more beautiful’ or bigger voice than she has in the moment. Otherwise, she can only pretend. Pretending can also sometimes lead to outward successes, popular or material success, but that is not the same as artistic success.” - Edvin Szamosi

In just under two weeks we will be singing beautiful Hungarian folk songs, intricate Bartok arrangements, plus a few arrangements by contemporary composers (including one by me and another by @saraserpamusic) 🐉

We’ll be in Northampton, MA first and then in upstate New York near Hudson.
