POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
All the fall vibes as the south finally gets some crisp weather. I had to consult the mountain of books next to my bed for these, but it made me even more aware of just how many books I have waiting for me 😅 what’s on your list?

I missed banned book week by a bit but here you go anyway. Reading banned books is a great example of why reading is political. In the words of @stephenking “When books are banned from school libraries, run to your public library, or the nearest bookstore, and read what it is your elders don’t want you to know.”

Ok so this one might be a bit too niche for booksta but I’m going to post it anyway 😂 I grew up on Redwall and there’s a special place in my heart for epic tales where the main characters are animals; something about it really ratchets up my interest level. So I’ve put together a list of the best stories in that genre I could think of, specifically intended for adults. Plenty more good ones for kids; maybe I’ll have to make a part two for that! Let me know what you think and if there are any good ones I missed! Love y’all.

It’s my national holiday, y’all! I came out as bisexual later in life, at the age of 25, and I wish at that time someone had handed me a list of fiction books about bi characters; being able to see myself mirrored in books I enjoyed reading would have smoothed that transition so much. So I figured the next best thing would be to create that list myself, on the off chance a baby bi stumbles across this post and needs some recs! So whether you yourself are bi or just an ally who loves representation in their lit, please consume, enjoy, and let me know which ones mean the most to you! Oh and go tell a bi person you see and love them. Thanks!

Train Dreams by Denis Johnson-

This was a rough one but at least @readtotheclass read it with me. In one of the early chapters we both went - “WTF???” and that scene set the tone for the rest of my feelings on the book. Every scene in this I’m just going what? What the heck?! What am I reading? And the ending just smashed that feeling right in my face.

I can’t even summarize it because I don’t think there’s a plot. There’s a dude. He lives and you follow his life for a while. But only 100 pages of it so all the vignettes, we could very loosely say, point to A meaning of the book because I don’t think there’s a canonical meaning despite of what the award winners say. Yes I’d argue with them. But I’d have to see what other books they like.

The movie is called Un Chien Andalou and my apologies to anyone who had to hear my atrocious French. You can find it on YouTube. It’s about 10 min long although I expect no one to make it past two minutes.

After deep reflection based on the one comment by someone who liked this, my opinion remains NO, no no. Although clearly, some people really do like it and I appreciate that their literary taste is different from mine so check out other opinions!

Shoutout to my fellow over-caffeinated, under-rested, bookish girl dad @decaf_dada for the inspiration. As you can see, my head has always been this size, and I’ve been trying to fill it with books this entire time. Song choice to honor our Queen, and I’ve tagged everyone I’d love to see the same thing from!
