Oh heya! This is us. Nathan & Emma Bond. Nathan usually stays away from the camera but he is very much there behind the scenes, always. He’s our top grower + irrigation and logistics person.
I am head researcher, designer and champion weeder. (Also known as Artist and Designer of @madiandpip and @sustainablefloristry Network Member)
Here we are out the front of @schoolofsustainablefloristry

We learnt so much from the Season Led Florist program and visiting Lucy’s incredible walled garden @howburyfarmflowers in the UK.

If you are running an event at Brisbane, Gold Coast or Scenic Rim; let your florist know that you want seasonal flowers; ideally those field and garden grown by #licencetobloom 😉
If you’re pretty handy with flowers and want to arrange yourself for your event, we sell to flower lovers too

Pay attention to the flowers.
To the flowers growing around you.
To the flowers you choose to buy.
To how they’re grown.
To how they’re arranged.
And to the season-led florists shaping the future of floristry.

30 designers created 15 floral compositions celebrating seasonal British flowers and sustainable floristry mechanics at @flowersontheedge The Florists’ Table. More than an exhibition, the florist-led initiative invited collaboration, connections, education and inspiration galore.

Notes from the panel talk

Advice to floral designers:
-We are all different and we absolutely can all stand out. Nobody will see things the way you do. Do what you are drawn to.
-Only share the work you do that aligns with your aesthetic and values, to attract more designs in that scope and feeling.
-How to educate your clients: When working on events you can ask what guests are eating. If the client is interested in local produce then you should definately educate them on the beauty and sustainability of locally grown flowers and foliage.

Advice to growers:
-Grow what you love! Florists will love the ones that you are excited about.
-Stay curious. Florists love unusual varieties and forms.
-Insure quality

When you work with seasonal flowers no two seasons are the same, it fosters spontaneity and the ingredients and how they grow informs how you arrange. When the flowers are just about to turn; that’s when they are most interesting as a designer. As well as the movement of the stems.. that’s really joyful!

A magical evening at the @gardenmuseum celebrating @british.flowers.week A joy to admire the lush work of the designers celebrating the beauty and sustainability of British-grown, seasonal blooms and foliage. The panel talk provided insight into the process and practice of the artists. A few more of my notes:

Where to find inspiration?
-The people with the unpopular opinions
-The garden
-The beauty of nature

On arranging:
-It is about what you leave out. Be creative with your negative space.
-There is no space for floral foam.

Advice to new florists:
-Learn with others (freelance and get experience)
-Value your time. Don’t overwork yourself- not everything needs to be your masterpiece.
-There is no “right” way. Do not compare yourself to others. Stay open and curious.
-Only take on the jobs that truly align with your interests and values. In order to do this, consider keeping your other job; thus keeping your practice authentic and nurturing your floral identity.
-When florists offer free work they devalue the industry’s skills and media (the flowers).
-Consider the whole system. How you are sourcing, designing and sharing your designs with the world.
-Anything is possible.

At the @schoolofsustainablefloristry I am learning an approach to floristry led by the seasons, with a untamed naturalistic style of floral design that is always underpinned by sustainable mechanics.

As a student of today I had the joy of designing with flowers from @howburyfarmflowers with kind direction from my wonderful teacher Cissy. We started the day with bridal bouquets, made a sculptural composition and in the afternoon explored flowers for celebrating life. All were designed without floral foam using locally grown flowers.

Today I wore a dress I had made. It is made using only biologically circular components, and the fabric is @auscotton , traceable to the farm. Thank you to the Rogan family for growing my beautiful dress! This dress is particuarly special to me, as it never left Australian shores during the full supply chain, and the farm where the cotton was grown was the first cotton farm my Dad drove a cotton picker, when he was about 20! I grew up on the land in Australia and I have such a sense of pride to design, sew and showcase our local fibres. Proud to be a @win.cott My earrings today were ceramic flowers by the talented @juliabramich_ceramics

“The future of floristry is season led, local and sustainable.” @schoolofsustainablefloristry
Pens down and snips up today as I further my floral education at The School of Sustainable Floristry, whilst on a trip to visit family in England.
What magic to be lead through @howburyfarmflowers a 19th century walled garden with Lucy sharing her vast knowledge of growing. I was delighted when I saw varieties that we are growing for the first time. Back home ours in Australia at @licencetobloom are small and overwintering, here it is Summer and though the temperature is similar to our winter but the flowers further along!
Inside we had the privilege of designing with the stems from the garden with the incredible guidance of Cissy @_wildstems_

Day one of British Flower Week
#BritishFlowersWeek

Itinerary this week:
Monday - Wednesday: The Season Led Florist program at School of Sustainable Floristry, Bedford

At @licencetobloom we grow in a subtropical climate which allows us to grow unusual stems including these beautiful soft pink torch gingers! Colour matched here with our roses and arranged with agapanthus, sweet pea and floss flowers. Stems are nurtured in our private field and gardens.

We actively work towards zero waste floristry by practicing alternative design methods using sundries that can be easily recovered, reused, remanufactured, recycled or returned to the earth at the end of their loved life. @nofloralfoam

You’ve probs seen from time to time we share photos and posts from the amazing @emmabond_fashion fashion designer with @madiandpip based near the Gold Coast.

Well ……she’s also an illustrator and here she is at work. These pics were snapped @theekka last week. @hippyaunty13 from @auscotton shared news / pics of how busy they were. Both have an incredible commitment to Australian cotton.

We first met Emma when she joined and was named an Australian Future Cotton Leader a few years back. We love facilitating this program with @auscotton A year later she was named Young Australian Cotton Achiever of the year.

Emma grew up on a cotton farm near Narromine, NSW and ever since has loved designing and working with natural fibres grown in Australia - especially cotton. She designed and made a 100% cotton wedding dress that made the Runways in Sydney.

Fast forward to today and Emma also loves educating consumers and being an ambassador for cotton. She lives and breathes the beauty of cotton - and as captured at The Ekka last week is also an amazing fashion illustrator.
