Next time, look closer at the rocks. You may just spy a life you lichen a lot 🤓✨

Old Man’s beard is a lichen and what we perceive to be a singular organism, but it’s actually a union of multiple kingdoms. In an incredible symbiosis, a fungus forms a composite body (the lichen we see) that’s both a substrate to collect water and a foothold for algae to thrive on sharing photosynthesized nutrients along with yeasts that live inside and protect the lichen! As lichenologist Trevor Goward says, “Lichens are fungi that have discovered agriculture.” Over 100 lichen species remain in Marin, with the greatest variety at Point Reyes. @pointreyesnps @pointreyes_prnsa

Hypogymnia always gives a splash of contrast in conifer forests. This species above appears to be a large, healthy Hypogymnia apinnata. However, since I did not want to remove this lichen from his log could not properly ID. Hypopogymnia is a common epiphytic lichen in the forest of the Pacific North and compose a large component of the lichen biomass. The brown dots are apothecia which ard a nice contrast. Apothecia are a special part of the lichen where spores are produced. ~

One of the more enchanting lichens of the Pacific Northwest, its the pixie cup from the genus Cladonia. This is an interesting lichen taxonomicly. Its form is a mix between foliose (leafy) and fruticose (shrubby). The “cup” part is called the podetia.
Still haven’t found any pixies hanging around this lichen😆 ~

Lobaria pulmonaria - Tree lungwort 🌳🌬 A species that has been mystifying me since I started going to @evergreenstcol where I see it every day on my way to and from the parking lot as well as many places in between. From wiki - “Lungwort is a large epiphytic lichen consisting of an ascomycete fungus and a green algal partner living together in a symbiotic relationship with a cyanobacterium—a symbiosis involving members of three kingdoms of organisms.” How cool.. Lichens are incredible! They are sensitive to air pollution which makes me wonder about their abundance in the college’s huge parking lots. You can see multiple species in my photos including some shield lichens (Parmelia sp.) pumpkin pie lichen (Ochrolechia sp.) and probably a few others I can’t detect, all sharing trunk space on a Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum). I love the tiny landscapes they create 💚 There has been recent research supporting the medicinal benefits of Lungwort and it’s been used traditionally as a remedy for lung disease due to its appearance resembling lung tissue. Hot water extracts have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and ulcer preventing properties. It’s still used for asthma, urinary incontinence and lack of appetite and in India is used to treat hemorrhages and eczema. I’m very excited to continue learning about Lichens and their mind blowing symbiosis. I’m also a proud new member of the @nwlichenlogists 🤓
