An ode to the streetery. We love them, we hate them, they have helped and hurt us. But like the house that was the home to Compass Rose and now @sookdc , the streetery held many stories and had many lives. This week we demolish this structure that was born out of necessity. In a time when everything was upside down, why not just build a structure in a street, make it look like a Russian train car, serve a new menu when you have zero resources, try to make it warm and dry while not burning it down-totally normal.

For a time we rented the deserted Matchbox patio and put up tents and heaters. That really felt like the end of days. Then we launched our own space in February of 2021, best weather ever… we remodeled, we added fans, we added heaters, we added electricity to support it all. We drank, we laughed, we cried, our feet froze on the frigid asphalt while we sat under blankets and talked about how insane it all was.

We made the absolute best of a horrible time by finding a safe place for people to come together when actually being together was mainly dangerous. I’ll always marvel at the creativity, ingenuity and pure grit we have all showed these last many years but especially at the beginning, these types of survival mechanisms were crucial. I am forever grateful to the teams and people who supported this crazy space and helped to make it special even on the worst of days.

I’m grateful to the city for helping us along the way, I hope DC can stay supportive and creative with us on how to dine outside because the pandemic may have receded but times are still difficult for a whole other set of reasons, many still products of pandemic times. Thank you to the neighbors who went without a few more parking spaces. Thanks to all of you who weathered the storms, figuratively and literally to support us🙏 RIP Compass Rose streetery born in to the pandemic in the winter of 2021.
