Some thoughts on the importance of failure:

I think it's very important to face failure frequently. Ideally, that failure happens in a safe context with minimal consequences. I think this frequent exposure to failure is very important for two reasons:

It allows our minds to get comfortable with doing things that are challenging and at the edge of our competency.

This frequent exposure to failure acts hormetically - an inoculation against the fear and discomfort that our minds create when faced with challenge and failure.

The more comfortable and familiar I can be with the experience of trying and failing, the easier it becomes to try without being paralyzed by the threat of failure. The mental inertia of staying in my comfort zone lessens its grip on my choices and behaviors.

Like most of us, I am much more comfortable with facing failure in certain domains of my life as compared to others. For example: I was never athletically gifted as a child, but I was always extremely competent at school and other intellectual endeavors.

Interestingly, it is much easier for me to accept failure when it comes to learning new physical skills than it is to experience failure in the intellectual domain - likely because it feels less threatening to a core, internalized part of my identity.

That being said, I do believe intentionally practicing failure in more comfortable domains - before eventually moving towards more personally challenging contexts - can help foster the skills and attitudes needed to navigate failure with grace.

A paraphrased quote from my friend Tom English on the idea of practice: “ We call it a practice because there is no need to be good, just a need to try”.

Want to keep growing? Make failure a regular part of your practice.

I wrote a poem in 2013 called ‘what is love’ it didn’t occur to me then but later down the line I discovered that love to me is ‘family’ both your born into family and the family you adopt along the way of navigating life.

Thank you to Winston and Riyu for reminding me x
