I watched these lady’s improve their stamina, cardiovascular systems, muscle definition and most importantly mental fortitude this summer. After our last class of the summer yesterday(in the rain)… I can’t do anything but thank them enough for showing up and being consistent in any situation regardless the weather. We all will face challenges in life. Why not be physically, mentally and emotionally strong/In shape to face them. Pensive Tuesday.

It’s January so I am looking back in order to move forward. My latest look back takes me to Boston, well Waltham, and my time at Brandeis.

I was an assistant to the fencing coach and I opened the gym on Saturdays for the Celtics to practice.

I developed an unlikely friendship with Reggie Lewis. He was kind and generous. Before and after practice we would laugh together.

He even made it possible for me to go to Grenada to study the revolution and invasion. He asked all the Celtics players including Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish to sign a ball that I auctioned to pay for the trip.

On the day after my return from Grenada, I delayed my meeting with him and did not go to campus. He unexpectedly fell ill on the court and died that afternoon.

I have not watched a Celtics game since.

Last week on my trip home to see my mom, I stopped to see my neice and her store had this sweatshirt. I felt compelled to buy it.

Oh, how I wish I could go back to those days. I miss him and his jokes. And in rare moments I even miss dealing with his two sidekicks: Dee and Rick.

Reggie was special and today I wanna honor him and the gift of his friendship, and his investment in my education.

BUT NOW you will get an insight into their hearts and minds. I am so excited that you will come to fall in love with my generous and brilliant friend Aja. She traveled from Philly to New Jersey to teach our girls singing. And she was the first person to support Marley’s #1000BlackGirlBooks initiative. THE FIRST!!

This summer, GrassROOTS SuperGirls and volunteer Jordan participated in the Climate Disaster Response Supply Chain Hackathon. This event is sponsored by
Supply Chain Management Department at Rutgers Business School in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Mandela Fellows, RWJBH Interns,students from the School of Social Work and GrassROOTS’ Team worked in teams to ‘hack’ even further in order to develop innovative leadership-driven solutions.
Cyclone Idai has caused significant damage and challenges to Mozambique. Teams were asked to strategize innovative solutions. Each team chose at one topic. They include: Supply Chain and Logistics, Communications, Relationship Building, Social and Mental Health, Children (Impact On-going Care), Medical Needs and Healthcare Systems, Energy and Water Systems, Transportation Systems, Housing and Building Structures, and Agriculture. #investingirls #changemakers
