They may not say it, but they may understand every word. 🗣️❤️

A non-speaking autistic child is not an unaware child.
Having few or no spoken words does not mean having little or no understanding.

Please stop talking about them as if they aren’t in the room. Stop assuming they don’t understand. And never use their limited speech as an excuse to disrespect them.

Your words matter. Your attitude matters. And your respect should never depend on someone’s ability to speak.

📢 Here’s your call to action: Share this reel. Educate someone. And the next time you hear someone speaking about a non-speaking autistic person as if they cannot understand, speak up.

Let’s build a world where every autistic person is treated with dignity, whether they speak, use a communication device, or communicate in other ways.

Their voice may look different, but their humanity is never up for debate. ❤️

For twenty-one years, we knew what Tuesdays looked like. The bus came. The day had a shape. Then graduation happened, and the Tuesday after was just... silence. “What are we doing Tuesdays?” isn’t really about Tuesdays. It’s about every ordinary day that suddenly had nowhere to go. So we’re building something for all of them. Real skills. Real confidence. Real belonging. Every day.

What we choose to believe, teach, tolerate and challenge today shapes the world neurodivergent people will experience tomorrow.

Awareness is a beginning.
Understanding is the change.
Acceptance is the future.

Let’s make sure tomorrow costs autistic people less, not more.

Did your child begin speaking naturally and easily? Mine didn’t.

I waited years to hear one word. Then two. Then three. Then one sentence. Then two sentences…

Did your child eat all kinds of foods, vegetables, and fruits? Mine doesn’t. He eats a variety, but not everything.

Did your child make eye contact? Crawl and walk on time? Sit for longer periods? Focus for five minutes? Point or gesture to share interest? Respond to their name? Become fully toilet-trained on time?

Maybe these things came naturally to your child.
For mine, they didn’t.

While you may have experienced these milestones without giving them much thought, I waited, prayed, hoped, celebrated small victories, and learned to appreciate progress that others might take for granted.

Our children may grow up in the same world, but our parenting journeys are not the same.

💙Different journeys.
💙Different timelines.
💙Different victories.

And every child deserves understanding, not comparison. 💙

@lifeotspectrum Posted: When an autistic child or adult goes missing, the first hours matter, and the people searching need to know where to look and how to approach.

Starting today, Maryland’s LEAD Act requires that police training include how to support people with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and dementia. That includes how to locate someone who is wandering or missing, how to search near bodies of water, sensory-aware approaches, reunification with family, documentation and coordination between agencies. The training is required for new officers at the academy, and the state’s police training commission will decide how it’s rolled out to officers already serving.

It won’t change every encounter overnight, but water is one of the biggest fears for families of kids who wander, and it’s now written into how Maryland police are trained.

Does your local police department train officers on autism? 👇

@hollyrpeete thank you for everything you do for Autism children and families all the kind words you said to me that inspired me to do the same and being a Pillar in our community 💙🧩 Thank You 🙏🏿 REPOST- @lifeotspectrum - When RJ Peete was diagnosed autistic at 3, his parents, actress Holly Robinson Peete and former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, were told he would never hold a meaningful job.
Today RJ is a clubhouse attendant for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He gets the bullpen ready before games, stocks the fridges, helps with the laundry and is there to high-five players after every win. “He’s great at his job, his heart is gold,” manager Dave Roberts told the Los Angeles Times.
“He’s a joy to be around. We start the day with hugs,” said Freddie Freeman.
Holly has called watching those high-fives “such a gratifying moment.” A prediction made about a 3-year-old is not a ceiling.
What were you told about your child that turned out to be wrong?

For years, James was fascinated with MERGE signs.

He drew them constantly, in his notebooks, and on post-its that he would randomly stick around the doorframes in our house. It went hand-in-hand with his highway fascination, so I never really gave it that much thought.

Until now. A decade later, the image popped into my head - and for the first time I thought about how meaningful it was that this kid, this beautiful, complicated, loveable kid, who always moved in his own lane in some ways, but was also ready to connect if you could meet him in the right place, the right space, the right musical moment in time - was drawn to the MERGE symbol.

“merge (noun): to combine to form a single entity, to join together, to integrate”

You guys. My mind is blown.
