one of the things we loved wearing during the outlast challenge was this @deafathletic tank, by a deaf-owned small business founded by dennis heath, an athlete based in michigan who knows firsthand the serious safety risks deaf athletes can face.

the brand is designed for runners, hikers, and cyclists, with a simple goal: helping you feel safer and more visible while doing the sports you love.

we decided to wear the brand during outlast, and the bright colors were perfect for the night run. they made us easy to spot in the crowd and on the trail, but what really stood out was the big “deaf” across the back.

on a narrow trail in the dark, it was such a simple but important way to let runners behind us know that we couldn’t hear their cues.

and people really noticed.

one runner actually made a point to introduce himself after seeing our shirts. later, he cheered us on from the trail with encouraging words like “good j-o-b.” 🥹 other runners tapped us on the shoulder or gave us a low wave to let us know they were passing.

we felt like people were genuinely more aware and mindful of us throughout the race, and that meant so much.

and the quality? top notch. the performance wear feels like a second skin, and they have short sleeve tees, tanks, zip vests, runner’s hats, and bib snaps. they even have a tee specifically for allies of the deaf community, which is a great way for hearing people to show their support and solidarity.

i highly recommend deaf athletic brand, whether you’re a runner, hiker, cyclist, or an ally of the deaf community. the gear is high quality, comfortable, functional, and designed with real experiences and safety needs in mind.

if you’re an athlete, check them out. if you’re an ally, check them out. visibility and safety matter. ❤️

OUTLAST: AUSTIN

one 5k.
every hour.
for 6 hours.

5k every hour, on the hour. finish before the hour is up, then rest until the next one begins.

miss the start or fail to finish a lap in time, and you’re out.

proud of us. this was HARD. some fell. some cramped. some cried. everyone got pushed to their limit.

but we showed up. we stayed in it. we kept moving when it hurt.

six 5ks. six hours. one hell of a test.

we didn’t just survive it.

we outlasted the rest.

what a crew. 🤩

last week we had three teams ready for hybrid hour, but the storm had other plans. some headed home, some knocked out a 5k in the rain instead (👏🏽), and some made their way over to hyrox supper club over at @squatchfrontierfitness!

a special shoutout to @karina.howell84, who has completed 33 marathons with marathon number 34 coming up. she got her first taste of a hybrid workout and absolutely jumped right in. she had a blast. 🤭

thank you to @squatchfrontierfitness for the warm welcome and for creating such a fun and supportive space for everyone.

now we’re ready to run it back at hybrid hour tomorrow. are you? 😉🔥

last thursday we checked out hybrid hour, a free community event hosted by @bodyartrunclubaustin and @padel.39 and we had such a great time!

hybrid hour takes place every thursday this summer and is completely free to attend. all you have to do is rsvp ahead of time.

we already have three teams locked in for july 17, and we’d love to see even more of y’all come out next week! whether you’re new to fitness or just looking to try something different, this is a fun way to get moving, meet new people, and represent @aslrunatx.

also, if you’re looking for more opportunities to run, be sure to check out barc’s run club. they meet on wednesday evenings and friday mornings and are another great way to stay active and connect with the local running community.

come join us next thursday and let’s keep showing up, supporting local community events, and having fun together! 🔥
