Yeehaw energy only 🤠 - - - This is modern cowboy grit, traded for diesel and steel. @drewmerritt stands high above the pavement, treating a hydraulic lift like a wild stallion and a spray gun like a branding iron. It’s the raw, unglamorous side of the mural frontier—dust in the air, the hum of the machine, and a lone painter wrangling a massive brick wall in the middle of OTR for @blinkcincinnati . Watching him work up close, you see past the festival hype and realize the sheer heavy lifting it takes to pull this off. It’s crazy seeing a friend look so casual up there, completely in his element, forcing his signature classical realism onto the rough, unforgiving concrete canvas while the city swallows him up. - - - Experienced my first BLINK Cincinnati with capturing Drew Merritt, one of my favorite artists and good friend. The festival was fun, chaotic, full of life, and I loved every minute of it. I got to see Drew in his element, and he let me experiment with new techniques I’ve learned since our last project. And of course I had to get his signature flame thrower finish move as always. It was also really an amazing experience to see Drew speak at BLINK Intersections conference day on Art, Advertising & the Space In Between with creative leaders from Cincinnati and beyond. Drew gives an inside experience of how he collaborates with clients, companies and agencies to form a strong partnership that provides a great working relationship that benefits all parties goals without compromise. It’s rare to hear Drew talk about the behind-the-scenes admin side of his work. A great learning experience. You had to be there to hear the knowledge drops. Rueb spent weeks with Brett Harper and the Harper team tracing the start of Charley’s work for Ford Times, a collaboration between an artist and a car company long before brands and artists shared a screen. Charley worked with the magazine for more than 30 years. He called the assignment the break of his life. A feeder in the backyard. A field guide that held still. T-squares, French curves, and compasses. Wings instead of feathers. Minimal realism, born in the pages of a pocket magazine that came with the car. That same Cincinnati story is about to step into the galleries. The Art of Charley Harper: Creatures Wild and Tame opens at the @cincyartmuseum on October 16. Edie McKee Harper: Modernist at Play opens at the @taftmuseum on October 17. Two unassuming sweethearts stepping on to a big stage! And this weekend, the birds leave the page. Last night was a breathtaking experience as some of the world’s greatest orchestral music and works of art came together as one on the @musichallcincy stage! @maestrojmr and the Cincinnati Pops performed works by Gershwin, Respighi, Debussy and others, while visual projections of Saul Steinberg’s “Mural of Cincinnati,” Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” works by Cincinnati’s own Charley and Edie Harper, Robert S. Duncanson and more were projected in the hall for a vivid display of art for the eyes and ears. Guests were able to explore our art exhibit in Wilks Studio throughout the evening with JMR stopping by after the show to sign purchased vinyl of the Pops’ latest album, “Harlem Renaissance”! He’ll be signing again after our final two performances! We’re thankful for our partnerships with visual projectionist @lightborneinc and the @cincyartmuseum and @taftmuseum for lending their artwork to help us bring this idea to life as a melodic, living art gallery.
