Foster Avenue Pierhead Light, Chicago

Construction date unknown but likely built during Chicago’s early 20th-century lakefront improvements, this landmark is still a navigational and recreational beacon today as it sits at the end of the breakwater near Foster Avenue Beach. The breakwater was constructed in the 1920s–1930s as part of the North Side lakefront improvements associated with Lincoln Park’s expansion. Sand was dredged from the bottom of Lake Michigan and transported by barge to create Foster Avenue Beach and Montrose Beach. This dredging operation required numerous barge trips for several months and was coordinated with the maintenance of navigational channels. It’s the Germania Club Building

Right on Germania Place and Clark Street in Old Town

This area used to be considered German Broadway, so where better to host this?

This was built in 1889 by Addison & Fiedler, in the Victorian-Romanesque style with German Neoclassical elements. Beautiful arched windows, cornices, and columns on its exterior.

This was built by and for a German men’s choir, made of German American Civil War vets who sang at President Lincoln’s funeral. The club was most vibrant at the late 19th- early 20th century, when most immigrant groups in Chicago were founding clubs and groups within their own nationality. However, as German American became more American and moved to the suburbs, the club officially disbanded in the 1980s.

Almost town down, it was made the NRHP list in the 1970s and became an official Chicago Landmark in 2011.

It hosts a few different businesses - including the Lighthouse Artspace and PiniPico, but the old ballrooms are still available for events like weddings or meetings.

Beautiful building, gotta stop in and visit sometime soon. More German Chicago history upcoming.
