Join us for a special outdoor screening of Tony Gatlif’s Latcho Drom in collaboration with @lightindustry. September 18 on the Northeast Meadow. #Free!

Shot in fittingly expansive CinemaScope across shifting seasons and several continents, Latcho Drom is a Romani epic. The critic Jonathan Rosenbaum once hailed Tony Gatlif’s film as a “difficult-to-categorize masterpiece,” and indeed it slips gracefully past the familiar borders of genre. Here is a movie that is something akin to a musical, a documentary, and a travelogue, yet ultimately advances in an idiom all its own.

RSVP on our website! 🍿🎥✨

major score @lightindustry …Movies For The Blind Vol 1-3 released by #ZapCassettes and signed by the artist, fluxus underdog #JeffPerkins who regaled us with stories of taxi driving days interviewing his passengers as a commission from Nam June Paik. Premiere of Movies For The Blind 4 was fluxus slam dunk.

Indescribably great screening @lightindustry last night …RARE films by folklorist Bess Lomax Hawes (Daughter of John Lomax, sibling of Alan & John Jr.) Featuring the Georgia Sea Island Singers, Ed Young, Earl Collins & a group of Los Angeles school girls in the film Pizza Pizza Daddy-O. Earl Collins plays the fiddle his father made with nothing more than a pocket knife (♥️the hearts are inlaid♥️)! More at lightindustry.org SUPPORT LIGHT INDUSTRY… heaven in Greenpoint!!!

Light Industry presents Kirk Tougas's "Letters from Vancouver". July 27, 19h

"Letters from Vancouver is a diptych of films, The Politics of Perception and The Framing of Perception, both from 1973, and each, in turn, is composed of two parts, making for a roughly hour-long experience articulated in four episodes. Part One of Politics is a brief set of simple title cards presenting McLuhan-esque propositions—“Our life environment is an information environment”—”What is distributed? Who controls distribution?”—while Part Two expands a 50-second trailer for Charles Bronson’s 1972 action thriller The Mechanic into a brutally incessant half-hour of increasing audiovisual distortion, the source material transformed through reprinting, in effect shifting the processes of Alvin Lucier’s 1969 sound work I Am Sitting in a Room onto 16mm. Join us tonight for a screening of Kathleen Collins' 1982 masterpiece “Losing Ground”, co-presented by Light Industry and introduced by lead actress Seret Scott, at 8pm on zoom. Link to attend screening in bio.

“Losing Ground” tells the story of a marriage between two remarkable people, both at a crossroads in their lives. Over the course of a summer idyll in upstate New York, Sara Rogers, a Black philosophy professor, embarks on an intellectual quest to understand "ecstasy" just as her painter husband, Victor, seeks a more earthy exploration of joy. Together, the two experience profound emotional and romantic awakenings. One of the very first fictional features directed by a Black woman, “Losing Ground” is semi autobiographical and stars Bill Gunn, Seret Scott, and Duane Jones.

“The Films of Bill Gunn” is presented as part of our current exhibition “Till They Listen: Bill Gunn Directs America”, celebrating the life and multi-faceted work of the filmmaker, playwright, novelist, and actor Bill Gunn (1934–1989), on view at Artists Space from June 5 – August 15.

Film still picturing Bill Gunn and Seret Scott, 1982. [On the right, a woman wearing a purple dress lies down on a couch with her eyes closed. To the left, a man sits on the floor in front of her, wearing a yellow t-shirt and overalls.]
