Last week’s summer workshop for graphic design students at the Art Academy of Latvia.

The workshop consisted on a 5 day exploration on walking as practice, food culture, memories, recipes, and jelly as a medium. The outcome was a small project that combined the idea of what a recipe can be and the materiality of agar-agar jellies. Students came out with different ways to work with the material, making tasty jellies and recipes that communicated their own personal narratives.

Thank you @rutajumite for the invitation and support throughout the summer workshop.

🎈 In the beginning of June, Ruta and I ran Biomaterial Exploration — a five-day summer school for graphic design students at the Art Academy of Latvia.

The workshop had two parts running in parallel. The first: making a biomaterial from scratch. Three teams, three materials — yarn, vegetable waste, dandelion fluff. Everything had to be sourced, not bought — collected from people, picked from fields, rescued from waste. The full process, from finding the material to the finished sample, had to be documented. That constraint was the point: to make students conscious of where materials come from and what's possible outside of what's already on the market.

The second part was video. Not documentation — a designed format. The brief asked students to think about how to tell the story of their recipe: what narrative to choose, how to build tension, when to reveal. The same decisions you make designing a book or a poster, just in time.

The idea behind combining both was simple. Design is evolving, and visual language is moving. We wanted students to be comfortable working with their hands and with a timeline, to understand that a screen-based format is still a design format — and to go the full distance, from raw material to a finished piece they could stand in front of and talk about.

The students were sharp, ambitious, and genuinely engaged with the brief. Working with them was one of the better parts of this.

The workshop closed with an evening show at Zuzeum — physical samples, video screenings, and student presentations. A good place to end.

Yesterday I wrapped up my beginner type design workshop at @dizaina.nodala @makslasakademija. I meant for my students to dip their toes into type design, but some jumped in and swam just like that! 👏Thank you for your enthusiasm!

As a side note: I’m so happy for @fontra_editor to exist. A free app that works on Windows, it came in very handy ❤️‍🔥
