Happy to launch this new collaborative series on Forgotten Architecture, built together with our community ❤️ Today’s contribution comes from Angelika Lee (@lika.lee lee): Otar Kalandarishvili and Gizo Potskhishvili, Republic Square – “Andropov’s Ears,” Tbilisi, Georgia, 1983 (demolished in 2005). Built in 1983, the monumental concrete arches served as a ceremonial tribune for Soviet parades and official speeches. Although inspired by the city’s thermal springs, locals quickly nicknamed the structure “Andropov’s Ears” 👂 after Soviet leader Yuri Andropov, turning it into an ironic reference to KGB surveillance. A bust of Vladimir Lenin stood beneath the arches until the early 1990s. The monument was demolished in 2005 as part of Georgia’s campaign to remove Soviet symbols from public space. Today, it survives only in photographs and memory—a reminder of how ordinary people can reclaim monuments through irony.
