Had such a beautiful time hosting the Abloh Air 001 class from Chicago at our studio in Milano!

We spent an afternoon experimenting with video, building together what will soon become the official music video for their track!

Grateful for the energy, the trust, and the moments we shared together…can’t wait for you to see what came out of it!

Big love and infinite thanks to Shannon, Athi, Marcie and the whole V.A.F. team for continuing to make such amazing things happen and for believing in us!

A message from our co-founder @chilldays : “Last week I was able to welcome flight 001 of @virgilabloh___foundation at @spaziofonte . One of those rare full circle moments in life. For years with some of Virgil’s close friends we’ve been saying how we graduated from the “Abloh University”.

For me to be able to host the workshop in Fonte, pass my knowledge with those amazing young artists and share stories about V and my journey was a very special moment. An emotional one.

Before we got the space that now we call Fonte, it was a tough period, Virgil had passed away and I was full of uncertainties. I remember how I literally felt him kicking my ass and could hear him telling me to just do it and stop looking for excuses with his calm laughter. The “you got this” he would always say.

Thankfully @moabvillain & @_millerb were crazy enough to dive head first into this journey together. 3 years deep, Fonte remains a still place in a perpetual movement that we keep on building together.

Something I believe is that one of the ways we honor Virgil’s legacy is that our door is always open for the next generation, if this is so it’s not for us to judge.

Thank you Shannon, Athi, the whole foundation, all production teams and especially to you “Flight 001” for the trust, inspiration and the time we spent together! Looking forward seeing all the amazing things you guys are going to do! You’re always welcome back!”

On Sunday, January 18 at DePaul University, we proudly presented our project as Los Médicos—paying homage to the artists and musicians that would provide healing joy and solace during the baquiné. Historically, the baquiné was an Afro-Caribbean practice, where music and dance were offered during the wake or funeral celebration of a young child that passed away. In Puerto Rico, the cultural workers who provided the festive environment during the baquiné were called Los Médicos.

Los Médicos is a Chicago-based ensemble committed to building and healing community through Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba.

From 2024-2025, our braintrust, including Arif Smith, Lauren Brooks, Roberto Pérez, and Teofilo Lopez, convened to imagine how to adapt YLO archival materials into Bomba songs. Our team also thought deeply about traditional Bomba songs that would thematically align with the political vision and community work of the Young Lords.

What would be the best way to honor Chairman Cha Cha and the rank and file? How could Bomba as Puerto Rico’s oldest surviving musical and dance tradition, an African-rooted cultural practice steeped in liberatory praxis and resistance, provide us with the cultural framework and historical grounding to venerate the YLO legacy with integrity and imagination?

Several years ago, many of us were sitting in the People’s Church during a Young Lords gathering waiting to share some Bomba, and Chairman José “Cha Cha” Jiménez mentioned the importance of movement songs to help inspire and mobilize the people. It occurred to some of us that it would be impactful to archive some of those songs through the Bomba tradition. Later, in 2020, we had conversations with Cha Cha and Dr. Jacqueline Lazu about a project where we could bring that idea to life. Unfortunately, due to various reasons we were unable to find enough alignment to make the project happen at that time.

In 2024, Dr. Lazu contacted us about revisiting the Bomba project for an exhibition she was curating titled, “Tengo Lincoln Park en mi corazon,” which would celebrate the legacy of the Young Lords Organization. We were honored to accept the invitation, and immediately went to work.

THIS Sunday, Jan 18th, we’ve got something special happening for you and the family at the DePaul University’s campus! In conjunction with the exhibition Tengo Lincoln Park en mi corazón: Young Lord in Chicago, DePaul Art Museum invites you to an afternoon of Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba with Los Medicos. Bomba is Puerto Rico’s oldest surviving musical and dance form, rooted in resistance and collective expression.

@los_medicos_chicago is led by our Bomba faculty members including Lauren Brooks, Teofilo Lopez, Roberto Perez, and Arif Smith. The event features Bomba songs that were adapted from Young Lords Organization archival materials for the first time alongside traditional songs, activating the form’s power as a tool for political imagination.

It’s free and open to the public. RSVP is required - link in bio.

We hope to see you there!

Meet Qory, Jeremiah, and Moyakhe— three dynamic young artists who continue to grow through Azania Drum and have been an essential part of the Moves Moves network.

As youth instructors, teaching assistants, and musicians, they support a wide range of programming from West African Dance and Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba to Camp Azania and Brass Band Academy. Through their leadership, they help carry the mission of Music Moves Chicago forward — mentoring and modeling what’s possible for the next wave of artists and changemakers.

Music Moves is committed to their growth, not just as artists, but as Arts Activators and future leaders rooted in their communities. We are deeply grateful for the work they do and proud to lift them up in recognition and celebration.

And while these three are pictured here, we also want to shoutout Nkosi and Mika’il who are also doing this work! All of these young men are powerful examples of the next generation of creative leaders. 🎶💥🖤
