And that’s a wrap on my first exhibition as an independent curator!

‘Common Ground’ was dreamt up while walking through the studios, spotting links between works using similar materials and exploring related themes. As I wrote in the curatorial statement, the exhibition considers Earth’s finite resources in a celebratory and reverent manner, collectively underscoring the many ways we encounter, utilize, transform, and repurpose what is given to us from the ground.

Natural dyes and fabrics, found objects and ephemera, dirt, flesh, clay, discarded matter – the works in the show seemed to call to one another from the start and made it feel less daunting to gather them together in the space. After landing on the title (beating out options like ‘Down to Earth’ , ‘From the Ground Up’ and ‘Making Ground’) I spent far too long choosing fonts before designing and distributing the posters. I stared at the blank walls of the gallery for hours on end to map out the positioning, annotated floorplans, sent countless emails, and wrestled with more than one printer. @hb4god and I teamed up to revamp the PR strategy on behalf of the 25East Committee and I took over the @25eastgallery Instagram!

All 10 artists installed over a weekend of camaraderie and anticipation, bringing to life what I had imagined in the most spectacular way. I got to whip out my camera for some event shots at the opening reception and we celebrated all the marvelous work that went into the exhibition. So many people shared their congratulations and respects day by day, and the show was extended for an extra week!

I can’t begin to express how proud I am of this exhibition and all the artists who embarked on this journey with me. As a first show, it made a huge difference to be surrounded by so much care and support, and I will cherish these memories forever. Thank you to everyone who came and to those who cheered us on from further afield, it means so much!
