Among the many differences humans have, whether it is culture, language, skin color, there’s one thing we all have in common. We all have to die. Some view death as a transition of a soul to a realm far beyond, others view it with no greater meaning than a cessation of bodily functions. One thing that’s agreed upon, though, is that it really isn’t socially acceptable to insult, judge, or joke about those who have passed, or as many movies and TV shows say, “speak ill of the dead.” This especially goes for those we didn’t know personally.

September is Suicide Prevention Month. A month to raise awareness about suicide prevention, reduce stigma around mental health and share important resources.

Globally, approximately 720,000 people die by suicide each year. Of those 720,000, a vast majority are young adults ages 15-29. In fact, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young adults. Stats aside, young adult mental health is still too often dismissed or misunderstood because of cultural taboos, long-standing stigma and generational differences. Breaking those barriers is not just about making mental health easier to talk about; it is about making sure young adults feel safe asking for help before they reach a crisis.
