Black Maple Hill was founded in 1999 and rose to fame bottling premium aged whiskey from Stitzel-Weller and Heaven Hill. Unfortunately, the well eventually ran dry, and the brand slowly disappeared. The name and sketched pastoral artwork on the label look like they were lifted from a history book, but itā€™s all entirely fictionalā€”an attempt to evoke Kentucky. Rare Character recently resurrected the name with hopes of honouring the legacy and bringing the brand out of the woods. This premium small batch is their return to Black Maple Hill. On the nose, aromas of caramel, orange peel and a hint of candied ginger waft out of the glass. The palate is slightly oily with darker caramel with brown sugar and citrus. On the finish cinnamon, nutmeg and clove incrementally builds with each sip and last much longer than expected. This is nuanced and holds complexityā€” something very few bourbons can do at 95 proof. The Blair Witch Project was also released in 1999. The forest where the documentary team gets lost is the Black Hills, and you guessed itā€”itā€™s fictional. Despite the fake location, the movie was able to blur the lines between fiction and reality. Shaky handheld cameras, stick figures, and some creepy lore were masterfully executed, enough to put the entire nation in a chokehold. Attended our 1st Kentucky Bourbon Festivalā€¦loved visiting our favorite booth and people @preservationdistillery during the festival. You all killed it this year!
