Well friends, today marks exactly a year since I purchased the Shack! It was equally nice and sunny ☀️ October day!
A lot has changed in a year. The ramshackle structure has been rebuilt, repainted thanks to @gabibozeman, and we had an amazing first year here!!!
Big thanks to the Shack crew Lily and Avery and everyone else who’s worked here over the summer (Oscar, Genga, Olivia, Peyton, Bill, Susie, Jose, McKayla) and a huge thanks to all of our amazing customers who’ve shown so much love and support this year!!!

The Shack will close for winter on October 31st and we’ll reopen again next spring! There are going to be a lot of new and exciting changes happening this winter so stay tuned.

Also, don’t forget that this Saturday, Oct 24th we’re having our end of season party at the Shack from 10-6.

Second Room is pleased to present the upcoming show "autoluminescent", a debut solo show by Lillian Freemond, opening with a reception on October 2nd, from 6-9 pm located at 2700 W Leland Ave 2E.

In "autoluminescent", nocturnal scenes pose rich questions surrounding setting and asks for an open mind, pushing for one to get reacquainted with what may already be familiar. Atmosphere presses at skin and clothing to find a receptive space while color arises from stark, electric light, ambient glows, and prismatic shadows. In these environments, Freemond interrogates likeness, the treasuring of a face as a site of vanity, affection, commemoration, and vulnerability.

Lillian Freemond (b.1999) lives and works in Chicago IL.

In Book of Hours, Lily Freemond turns her attention toward the spaces where wilderness and urban life quietly converge. Observing deer at the LaBagh Woods Forest Preserve on the outskirts of Chicago, the images emerge from an act of sustained looking over the course of twelve months. Photographed on an iPhone through the lens of a pair of binoculars, each picture records a fleeting interplay between distance and proximity. The circular frame imposed by the binoculars recalls both an optical lens and the barrel of a rifle. Freemond photographs within this uneasy overlap.

In Book of Hours, Lily Freemond turns her attention toward the spaces where wilderness and urban life quietly converge. Observing deer at the LaBagh Woods Forest Preserve on the outskirts of Chicago, the images emerge from an act of sustained looking over the course of twelve months. Photographed on an iPhone through the lens of a pair of binoculars, each picture records a fleeting interplay between distance and proximity. The circular frame imposed by the binoculars recalls both an optical lens and the barrel of a rifle. Freemond photographs within this uneasy overlap. Where Sontag suggests the camera as an instrument that aims, isolates, and symbolically claims its subject, held at a distance, the animals in these images remain irreducibly their own continually slipping beyond the photographer’s reach. In these images the deer appear as fellow inhabitants of a rapidly transforming landscape. As the boundaries between city and forest become increasingly porous, animals occupy a new terrain. Book of Hours becomes a quiet witness to this Anthropocene, resisting spectacle or easy narratives of catastrophe. Ecologically, the deer themselves are not passive witnesses; their overpopulation has become a transformative force within LaBagh, reshaping the forest through overbrowsing even as they adapt to its changing conditions…
