I spent the day with @yummy411.fragrance and we had to bring some smell goods for each other to sniff. ✨ These are the black owned fragrances that I was able to get my nose on from her beautiful collection. Personal tidbit from a traditional oversharer: I am mostly estranged from my mother. There’s a side of estrangement that I don’t hear people talk about often — how it can be a thousand little bizarre papercuts. Life is complicated. There are many events and emotions that can obfuscate love. When I was a little girl, home sick with a fever, my mother would comfort me with a cool washcloth pressed to my forehead and the fizz of room-temperature ginger ale cracking open against the silence of a quiet house. This week, it occurred to me that that memory (and countless other memories of seemingly routine moments) have been stowed away for so long that I almost lost it. It was Bubble Phase — a fragrance by @lilydavon — that unearthed it for me. And for some of us, that’s the root of the fixation: the ability of a fragrance to pull a lump into your throat and kick you backwards to something you didn’t know you needed to remember. Lily Davon creates nostalgia through fragrance, but not in that roll-your-eyes way where it’s conceptual just for the sake of being conceptual. Bubble Phase is deeply wearable… but ONLY if your heart speaks its language. And this is exactly why I drift away from the mainstream. Because not everything is meant to be universally adored. Some scents are hyper-specific little portals to things we forgot we needed. It’s centered on ginger (no, truly… a true prerequisite for ginger lovers), but not the sugared, decorative kind. It’s got a sharp, effervescent bite (bolstered by kindreds like vanilla champagne, berries, blood orange, cranberry), tempered with a hum of sweet milk and coconut and anchored in sandalwood. It’s comfort outside of the obvious sense, something stranger and more intimate. The body remembering before the mind can explain. We deserve more than seasonal support and performance posts. We deserve rotation; not just representation. Let’s be real: • Black perfumers are underrepresented. • Our content doesn’t get pushed like the others. (I have 🧾 receipts.) • Our brands are closing…not due to lack of quality, but lack of reach. If you say you support diversity, equity and niche excellence - here’s how you can show it without spending a single dollar: 🔁 CALLS TO ACTION: ➤ Tag a Black perfumer (not just a founder) ➤ Tag 5 fragrance brands or houses ➤ Tag 3 celebrities (or those with influence) who should be wearing our work ➤ Repost any video from this carousel ➤ Duet this message (if you can) and add your voice. 📌 And let’s be clear: This isn’t only for BIPOC creators, but as a melanin woman in perfumery, my focus is on us. Because the love we pour into this work? It deserves to be circulated. Keep us in rotation. Not just for Black Business Month.
