This is how we save the world.

Rancho Via Organica in the high-desert region of Guanajuato, Mexico is a guiding light, a wonderful example of how we can restore ecosystems with regenerative agriculture.

2.5 billion people — 30% of the world’s population — live on degraded landscapes subjected to severe drought. These drylands now make up 40% of the Earth’s surface. Without irrigation, dryland farmers depend entirely on rainfall and soil moisture to grow enough food to survive. This fragile existence is further exacerbated by increasingly erratic weather patterns, forcing dryland farmers the world over to abandon their land in search of better opportunity.

The @viaorganica approach to farmer-led ecosystem restoration, if adopted and scaled, could prevent millions of farmers from becoming climate refugees, all while sequestering massive amounts of carbon and regenerating soils #billionagaveproject

Big thanks to @blakefilisuarez for the design 👏

Over the next few weeks, we're going to be sharing a few eco-restoration projects @joelwcaldwell has been documenting. Consider it a big ol' drumroll for our Judith D. Schwartz event Nov. 3 at @silverhillstudiochs

The Billion Agave Project | It’s estimated that 2.5 billion people—30% of the world’s population—live on degraded landscapes frequently subjected to severe drought. These drylands now make up ~45% of the Earth’s surface. Without irrigation, dryland farmers depend entirely on rainfall to grow enough food to survive. This fragile existence is further exacerbated by increasingly erratic weather patterns, forcing drylands farmers the world over to abandon their land in search of better opportunity | In the high-desert region of Guanajuato, Mexico, a group of innovative farmers have adopted a game-changing ecosystem-regeneration strategy that combines the growing of agave plants and nitrogen-fixing trees, such as mesquite, with holistic rotational grazing of livestock. Agaves require little-to-no irrigation and as they grow, farmers trim their massive leaves and finely chop and ferment the plant material for 30 days. The end product: nutritious, inexpensive animal fodder. After 10 years, farmers harvest the piña which mescal is made from. Animal fodder + piña cash crop + livestock means the difference between survival and grinding poverty. If adopted and scaled, this dryland restoration strategy could prevent millions of the world’s small farmers from becoming climate refugees, all while sequestering massive amounts of carbon and regenerating soils #billionagaveproject #goddamnthatsexciting
